About Surfing Australia

Introduction
Surfing Australia was established in 1963 and is the national governing body for surfing in Australia.

Our vision is to achieve the highest standards for the delivery and development of surfing in Australia. Our mission is to provide continuous quality development and opportunity in surfing, also providing leadership and direction in the areas of elite competition, community participation, environmental awareness and education.

Surfing Australia's Administration is based at Casuarina Beach Resort where it has also established its High Performance Centre for Elite Development. The High Performance Centre provides a world class facility for the coaching, training and testing of high performance athletes in a fully serviced live in environment.

Surfing Australia is recognised by the Australian Sports Commission as the governing body for surfing in Australia. Surfing Australia is a member of the International Surfing Association (ISA). The ISA is recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Surfing Australia is recognised by the Australian Olympic Committee.

Surfing Australia promotes and manages competitive surfing in the region through ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) Australasia which is one of the ASP International regional bodies.

Surfing Australia Coaching Courses are recognised by the Australian Sports Commission and the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme. Surfing Australia has state affiliations with Surfing Queensland, Surfing NSW, Surfing Victoria, Surfing Tasmania, Surfing South Australia and Surfing Western Australia.

Surfing Australia promotes participation through its 70 affiliated surfschools nationwide who in the last financial year delivered over 110,000 lessons. Surfing Australias Surfschools Worldwide network delivers quality lessons to all ages and abilities, presented in a supportive learning environment.

While there are various opportunities for individuals who surf from elite international competition, national championships, club competition to simply recreational surfing for enjoyment, the Surfing Australia philosophy is that surfing should always be fun!

What We Do
Surfing Australia is recognised by the Australian Sports Commission and the Australian Olympic Committee as the governing body of the sport of surfing in Australia. Surfing Australia is Australia's representing body for the international Surfing Association of which there are 42 member countries all recognised by their respective federal government.
Surfing Australia is responsible for running the National Titles for all disciplines in Australia. Surfing Australia has a state branch in six states, QLD, NSW, VIC, TAS, SA and WA. Boardriding clubs and all state activity is the responsibility of the state branch. There are over 250 boardriding clubs around Australia affiliated to Surfing Australia's State Branches.

Coaching
Surfing Australia in conjunction with the Australian Coaching Council has developed official surf coaching accreditations. Coaching accreditations are delivered by State Branches twice a year on average.

Education
Surfing Australia has a responsibility to deliver surf awareness and surf safety. The Safe Surfing Series is an example of the materials produced by Surfing Australia for high school students to better understand the beach and surf zones.

ASP Australasia
Surfing Australia operates the ASP Australasia regional licence and sanctions and manages professional surfing events in the Australasia region under a regional management contract to ASP International. ASP Australasia conducts and sanctions a variety of events through the Maldives, Indonesia, Philippines, Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia.

Insurance
As the governing body of the sport, Surfing Australia supplies insurance to all affiliated bodies, associated events and coaching activities. All activities, must be run to Surfing Australia's best practice and risk management policy.
