Travelsim Team Australia Leaves For Nicaragua ISA World Masters Surfing Championship
Tuesday, 10 July 2012Former Pipe Masters Champion Robbie Page leads a strong Travelsim Team Australia which leaves this week for the Nicaragua ISA World Masters Surfing Championship.
To be held at Colorado Beach at Hacienda Iguana from July 14-22, the championships attract more than 130 surfers 35-years and older from 25 nations competing in the Masters (Over 35), Grand Masters (Over 40), Kahuna (Over 45) and Grand Kahuna (Over 50) divisions.
Travelsim Team Australia finished fifth at last year’s titles in El Salvador after winning the title the previous year in Panama.
Page (Kempsey, NSW) won the Pipe Masters in 1988 and is a previous dual medal winner at the ISA Masters after winning a bronze medal in the Masters and a gold medal in the Grand Masters at the 2008 titles in Punta Rocas, Peru.
Page will compete in the Masters Division alongside Dean Hall (Miami, Qld), who won the bronze medal in the Masters Division in 2010. The pair will come up against 2000 ASP World Champion Sunny Garcia, who will be competing for Hawaii in the Masters and Grand Masters divisions.
Former ISA Masters Champion Rod Baldwin (Copacabana, NSW) returns to the team in the Grand Kahuna Division after missing last year’s championship. Baldwin won the bronze medal in the Kahunas in 2008 and won the gold medal in 2010.
"It's definitely an honour to represent Australia. I know the whole team is very excited to be travelling to Nicaragua, especially for Colorado Beach, which looks like a fantastic spot to hold the ISA World Masters," Baldwin said. "This is my third ISA World Masters; I really appreciate the opportunity to travel to these events and experience a different part of the world. It's great to escape our winter at home and get into some warm water and, hopefully if conditions are right, world-class waves."
Sandra English (Budgewoi, NSW) will be flying the Travelsim Team Australia flag in the Women’s Masters Division and will be looking to improve on her medal winning performances in 2008 when she won the bronze medal and 2010 when she collected the copper.
David Hammond (Avalon Beach, NSW) and Mark Cameron (Woolgoolga, NSW) will be competing in the Grand Masters Division, while Scott Weinreich (Scamander, TAS) and John Schmidenberg (Emerald Beach, NSW) will be chasing the medals in the Kahunas Division.
The team is managed by Lee Schulze (Scamander, TAS).
