Victorian Clubs go head to head at the Be the Influence Australian Boardriders Battle
Wednesday, 11 December 2013Phillip Island, Victoria (Wednesday December 11, 2013): The Be the Influence Australian Boardriders Battle series is heading to Phillip Island this weekend to pit club against club in a new Australia wide series.
The Victorian Qualifying event will give two Victorian Boardriders clubs a spot in the National Final taking place in Sydney on the Australia Day long weekend, which will be the biggest boardriders club event in Australian history with 16 of the country’s best clubs competing for over $100,000 in prize money.
The field is littered with talent from clubs including Phillip Island, Torquay, 13th Beach, Mornington Peninsula and Point Lonsdale.
Reigning Victorian Teams Titles holders Torquay will be favourites coming into the event with two former ASP World Tour surfers in Troy Brooks and Nic Muscroft. They will have some solid support from WQS warrior Cahill Bell-Warren, and up and coming juniors Zoe Clarke and Cody Robinson.
“The Be the Influence Australian Boardriders Battle is an awesome idea. It’s a real game changer for clubs in terms of earning some money to help fund the competitions that we run” said Torquay club representative Cahill Bell-Warren.
“There is always a really strong field in Victoria for club events, its something to look forward to every year. To have former WCT surfers like Troy (Brooks) and Glyndyn (Ringrose) is great experience for our juniors.”
Looking to knock off the dominant club will be Phillip Island who also boast former World Tour surfer and current Victorian Open Champion, Glyndyn Ringrose. Ringrose has now settled into life on Phillip Island shaping boards for Island Surfboards, however is still dominant at a high level.
Rounding out the team will be freshly crowned Australian Under 16s Champion, Joe Van Dijk. Van Dijk is the younger brother of Nikki who has just qualified for the 2014 Womens World Tour.
Peninsula Surfriders Club will also be one to watch with powerful goofy footer, Caiden Fowler leading the charge for the famous club. Joining Fowler will be Mikey Barber and Matilda McLellan.
Teams must consist of seven competitors: two juniors (one male and one female), four opens (three males and one female) and one Over 35 (male or female), who will battle it out in a pairs division, five person teams division and skins division in a unique and exciting format.
In total, $105,000 is up for grabs across the entire National Series including the National Final. There is $30,000 available across the seven State qualifying events, while $75,000 will be split between the 16 clubs that make the National Final.
