High Seed Davey Cathels eliminated by Indonesia’s top pro-junior Putra Hermawan at the Billabong Pro Junior Asia!
Top Seeds destroy super fun Keramas at the Billabong Pro Junior Asia.

Keramas, Bali, Indonesia: Australia’s best under 20 year-old  surfers are dominating Asia’s best  at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Billabong Pro Junior Asia at  Keramas River-mouth in Bali

Running in excellent waves at Keramas (Ka-Ra-Mas)  river-mouth, Jack Freestone (Coolangatta/Queensland) and Garrett Parkes (Byron Bay) set the pace early as both surfers scored excellent rides to comprehensively win their heats.

Freestone’s heat tally on his two top scoring rides of 18.65 included the day’s top scoring ride of a near perfect 9.9  and was the day’s best performance.

Garret Parkes continued his recent good form which included a 3rd in South Australia last week before coming to Bali while Ty Watson is out to make it back to back wins following his maiden ASP win in South Australia last week – both impressive winners today.

Sunshine Coast’s Chris Friend kept his hopes of qualifying for the ASP World Junior Championships alive by advancing through his round three heat – Friend is presently in 5th position on the ratings and needs a good result to break into the top four to guarantee a spot.

Number two seed Davey Cathels eliminated! –

The final heat of the day was always the most anticipated and it lived right-up to its promise with South Africa’s Beyrick DeVries again “flying” to an impressive win but the shock of the day was the  second placed progression in this heat by Putra Hermawan (Indonesia/Nusa Lembongon) who defeated highly seeded and rated Davey Cathels (AUS).

Hermawan executed some massive early moves in this heat and despite his two scoring rides being little more than one-manoeuvre rides,  he scored highly putting pressure on Cathels who scoured the line-up unsuccessfully searching for a good score throughout the heat.

Thirty-two surfers remain in the event, 26 Australian’s, 3 Japanese, 1 South African, 1 Brazilian  and one Indonesian.

The next two days are expected to deliver great conditions as the event heads toward the finals.
