Surf Coaching Courses

Surfing NSW presents multiple Level 1 Surf Coaching  Accreditation Courses each year. The 2-day course is a part of the Australian Sports Commission's National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS) and both cover the necessary theory components of the NCAS and the sports specific practical requirements of Surfing Australia. The courses are also recognised by the International Surfing Association (ISA)

NCAS approved courses are recognized nationally and is the standard qualification requirement for employment in any one of Surfing Australia's Licenced Surf Schools. There are currently in excess of 70 Licenced surf schools around the country.

LEVEL 1 SURF COACHING ACCREDITATION 

To gain full accreditation, there are several qualifications and practical requirements that are required to be completed by the candidate in addition to sitting the accreditation course.

Candidates must complete:

1. Attendance at a two day Surfing Australia Level One Instructing Course
2. 20 hours practical instructing (beginner level) guided by supervisor coach

These 20 Hours must be completed AFTER attending the Level 1 course.

3. Instructing competency checklist, completed then signed off by designated supervisor coach
4. Understand and sign our ‘Coach’s Code of Ethics’ agreement
5. Surfing NSW membership (prior to sitting the course)

6. Working With Children Check (prior to sitting the course)
7. Hold any one of the following ocean safety awards (prior to sitting the course):
 Bronze proficiency: Surf Lifesaving Association (SLSA)
 Surf Rescue Certificate: SLSA Community award
 Ocean Rescue Award: Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS)
 OSSCA Award Professional Ocean Lifeguard Association (APOLA)

8.Hold a current Applied First Aid Certificate

- Be aged 16 years or over

- Be a competent surfer (you will need to demonstrate this during the course)

Cost: $480.00 (Once all of the above has been completed and approved by Surfing Australia and your State Branch, your coaching accreditation will be valid for 2 years). 

OSSCA Accreditation

APOLA generally conduct the OSSCA courses around the dates and locations of our Level 1 Coaching Courses which then provides the opportunity for candidates to complete most of their accreditation over 3 days. Booking for the OSSCA course is made by contacting John from APOLA on 0408 855 267.

Coaching Re-Accreditation

Level One Surf Coaching Accreditation is valid for two years from date of initial accreditation. Surfing Australia will send you a reminder when your accreditation is due to expire. Your coaching accreditation will expire after 2 years. You MUST reaccredit with your state branch for your coaching accreditation to be valid. To gain re-accreditation, you must re-submit copies of the above documentation to Surfing NSW, send in a completed reaccreditation form and provide payment of $150.00 to your state branch. (this payment covers you for 2 years of membership and coaching accreditation).

LEVEL TWO - SURF COACH

To obtain the Level 2 Surf Coaching Accreditation, you need to hold the Level 1 Surf Instructor Accreditation as a pre-requisite. Courses are conducted by the National Branch several times a year. Course dates will be listed on this page and application forms can be found under the "Documents" tab.

Becoming a Level 2 Coach takes the coach from learn-to-surf through a greater understanding of competitive surfing. By gaining your Level 2 accreditation it also opens up greater opporunities to become involved in coaching at a State and High Performance level. To obtain this award an individual must adhere to the following accreditation requirements:

1. Attendance at two day Surfing Australia Level Two Coaching Course
2. 40 hours of face to face coaching practice at Novice or developing surfer level
3. Maintain practical coaching diary
4. Completion of online exam
5. Surfing Australia membership
6. Working With Children Check (prior to sitting the course)
7. Hold any one of the following awards (prior to sitting the course):
Bronze proficiency: Surf Lifesaving Association (SLSA)
Surf Rescue Certificate: SLSA Community award
Ocean Rescue Award: Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS)
OSSCA Award Professional Ocean Lifeguard Association (APOLA)

FLAT WATER - STAND-UP PADDLE BOARD (SUP) COACHING COURSE

The Surfing Australia FLAT WATER SUP course is the minimum qualification required to be a SUP instructor in Australia. To obtain this qualification an individual must adhere to the following accreditation requirements:

1. Attendance at a two day Surfing Australia FLAT WATER SUP Course

2. 20 hours practical instructing (beginner level) guided by supervisor coach (completed after attending the course) 

3. Pass a basic SUP skills test 

4. Surfing NSW membership (prior to sitting the course)

5. Working With Children Check

6. Hold any one of the following awards:

Bronze proficiency: Surf Lifesaving Association (SLSA)

 Surf Rescue Certificate: SLSA Community award

 Ocean Rescue Award: Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS)

 OSSCA Award Professional Ocean Lifeguard Association (APOLA)

SUP  - SURF and/or OPEN WATER MODULES 

The SUP SURF and OPEN WATER MODULES up-skill accredited Flat Water coaches by demonstrating the competencies required to effectively teach the beginner skills in SURF or OPEN OCEAN environments. The modules must be completed to coach in these specific environments.

To obtain either of these qualifications an individual must adhere to the following accreditation requirements:

1. Attend a SUP SURF or OPEN WATER Course

2. Complete your practical coaching hours, this includes session records signed off by a supervisor coach covering:

3. 10hrs of practical coaching experience by an approved SA SURF/SURF school

4. Hold a current Surfing Australia SUP Flat Water Coaching Accreditation (or Surfing Australia approved equivalent)

5. Complete SUP Specialist Module Workbook and return to State Branch

6. Pass the basic SUP skills test- Module Specific 

On completion of these requirements your Surfing Australia SUP SURF or OPEN WATER Coaching accreditation will be endorsed and a new coaching card will be issued.

International Judging and Officiating Course

Surfing NSW regularly hosts International Judging and Officiating Courses in conjunction with Surfing Australia at a variety of venues.

Surfing Australia Judging development courses are recognised as the only endorsed Judging Accreditation course by the Australian Sports Commission and the International Surfing Association.

The International Judging and Officiating Course is the first step in becoming a professional surfing Judge and Official and Surfing NSW and Surfing Australia are committed to providing a clear development pathway for our aspiring and, dedicated experienced officials.

Each Course participant pack consists of Surfing Australia Education Program bag, Colour Judging Manual, Work book, rule book, Level 1 Club judge ID card, Surfing Australia stickers and Surfing Australia magazine.

Upon completion of the International Judging Officiating course each participant will be accredited as a Level 1 Club Judge.

As a pre-requisite for the higher accreditation levels the course participant must provide 20 hours of judging experience under a qualified Surfing Australia Head Judge. On completion of these hours and finalising the necessary paper work/diary sheets course participants will be accredited with a level 2 State Judge qualification. Level 2 Judges can apply for the Level 3 International Judging qualification at any time with documentation of 100 hours of judging experience under a qualified Surfing Australia Head Judge.

To maintain your judging qualification you must be registered each year (January) the cost of registration renewal is: $25 for a Level 1 Club Judge- $35 for a Level 2 State Judge - $45 for a Level 3 International Judge.

Upon renewing your Judging registration each January the judge will receive their new judges pack which includes: Current rule book, updated peronalised and numbered judging ID card, Surfing Australia stickers and Surfing Australia Magazine.

Aside from the scheduled courses which are shown on the Upcoming Courses menu to the left, Surfing NSW can also run courses for clubs, schools or community groups wishing to register a group (min 12 people required) of candidates. A minimum of 2 months notice is required for scheduling.
