Eight VEGEMITE Surfgroms To Surf With World’s Best At Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast
10/2/2012
COOLANGATTA/QLD (10th February, 2012): Eight VEGEMITE SurfGroms are on their way as VIP guests to the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast where they will get a chance to meet and surf with their heroes.VEGEMITE SurfGroms is the world-first national junior surfing program which offers 5-12 olds an opportunity to develop strong ocean awareness and beach safety skills, while also developing a proficiency in surfing.
More than 5000 children across Australia have joined the program since it started in October last year.
Every registered participant had a chance to win a trip to the Quiksilver Pro starting on 25th February by providing a photo of themselves enjoying the program through the VEGEMITE SurfGroms SicPic competition or by simply describing their experience in 25 words or less in the VEGEMITE SurfGroms Is competition.
Six little frothers won a trip through the SicPic competition, while two wordsmiths put pen to paper to win their place at the world’s biggest surfing event.
The prize includes: flights and transfers to Coolangatta Airport for one child and one adult; one night’s accommodation at Coolangatta for one child and one adult; a Quiksilver Pro event merchandise pack; exclusive behind the scenes tour of the event site and the opportunity to meet and surf with some of the professional surfers competing.
They will also have access to the best seats in town on the VEGEMITE Mightiest Seat on the Beach, which will provide an uninterrupted, elevated view of the competition area plus also letting the kids try tarp surfing. It will be operating each day from around 7.30 in morning through to 4pm and serving VEGEMITE on toast all day plus hosting tons of giveaways with loads of VEGEMITE surf wax and Wahu beach toys.
Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark said it was a difficult task reducing the entries down to the winners.
“There were plenty of outstanding entries and some great moments capturing many of the kids’ first time standing up on a wave,” Stark said.
“All the winners are now on their way to the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast and hopefully one day we’ll see a competitor at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast who had their first experience of surfing through the VEGEMITE SurfGroms program.”
The six winners of the VEGEMITE SurfGroms SicPic competition were:
Rio Heaney, 7 (Torquay, VIC), Toby Lawrence, 6 (Clifton Beach, TAS), Wade Russell-Yates, 9 (Craigie, WA), Delta Woods, 8 (Woolgoolga, NSW), Harrison Tzannes, 9 (Broadbeach Waters, QLD) and Julian Michailidis, 10 (South Coogee, NSW).
The two winning VEGEMITE SurfGroms Is entries were:
“I love Vegemite SurfGroms, it has been awesome! I never want my lessons to end and can’t wait to go back for more! SURFING’S SICK!!” - by 12-year-old Zane Nugent-Hedley, from Newcastle, NSW.
“I’m 6 years old and had so much fun doing Vegemite SurfGroms. I learnt to surf and made some new friends!” - by six-year-old Charlotte Caldow, from Buderim, QLD.
VEGEMITE SurfGroms programs are continuing through the Surfing Australia Surf Schools Network with more than 70 delivery centres around the country. Parents can still register their children through the website – www.surfgroms.com.
VEGEMITE SurfGroms is proudly supported by VEGEMITE, Quiksilver, Wahu, Telstra, Surfing Australia, the Australian Sports Commission, Surfing World, and Coastalwatch.
