A School Holiday Program Like No Other

BL's Blast Off is a pre junior surfing festival that is a fun-filled school holiday program designed and organised by 1988 World Surfing Champion Barton Lynch to celebrate the coming of summer and Australia's rich surfing heritage. In it's 7th year, Blast Off is for boys and girls 14 years and under and promises a holiday activity like no other.

The aim is to introduce young surfers to the world of competition in a friendly and encouraging environment that focuses on surf improvement and family fun.

Major sponsors include Hurley, Skullcandy, Board Bog, Electric, Amazon Power, Streetboardz, Native, Fantasea, Beach Without Sand, Surfing NSW, Coastalwatch.com, Fuel TV, Surfing World Magazine and Chilli Surfboards.

BL's Blast Off runs every Spring school holidays and in 2012 will run from Monday September 24th to Thursday September 27th at Palm Beach NSW, Whale Beach and Avalon are the back up venues.
Divisions include Boys 14's, 12's, 10's, 8's and 6s and Girls 14, 12's, 10's, 8s and 6's.

A Unique Event
BL's Blast Off has many unique characteristics that set it apart from the rest. It runs during the week instead of the usual weekend, giving kids (who are on school holidays) the run of the beach. Every participant surfs at least two times before anybody is eliminated and heats are not scored on points. Instead, surfers are placed 1st to 6th based on their overall performance and are given advice and coaching to help them improve and assist them in the next round.

SunSafe This Summer
BL's Blast Off is designed to not only launch the upcoming beach season, but in conjunction with the Cancer Council of NSW, to promote awareness of their sun safe message to kids and their families.

Meet the Champions
It is incredible to watch the kids improve day by day under the guidance of a world champion and for them to enjoy the activities, games and heaps of family fun generated. BL's Blast Off is not just the participants, it is creating a carnival atmosphere that everyone loves.

At BL's Blast Off, the kids get to meet and hang with the champions of the sport, seven-time ASP World Champ Layne Beachley is a regular attendee. Legends like Tom Carroll, Rabbit Bartholomew and Damien Hardman, Ozzie Wright, Karlee Mackie, Terry Richardson, Richie Lovett, Koby Abberton, Toby Martin and young guns Perth Standlick, Mitch Crews & Cooper Chapman are all there to inspire the kids.

In 2011 307 kids participated in BL's Blast Off with every entrant receiving a prize bag full of goodies from the sponsors. Finalists receive incredible prizes from 1st through to 6th in every division.

Blastoff Idol
There is an evening celebration - Blast Off Idol, our very own talent search competition that allows the kids to show us their other talents and includes the presentation of the Keenest Groms Awards to the first entries received in each division.

A Helping Hand for Others
BL's Blast Off has raised donations for the Humpty Dumpty Foundation, the Cancer Council of NSW, SurfAid and Palm Beach SLSC. In 2009 & 2010 the money raised went to the Aboriginal Medical Service (AMS) in Redfern and went to help develop their surfing program for the indigenous youth, in 2012 we will again support the AMS.

The Disabled Surfers Association of Australia performs an exhibition at the event and for the last 3 years Blast Off has donated $1,000.00 on behalf of Active Tree Services to the DSA.

Blast Off also donates to the local schools - Avalon Primary and Barrenjoey High.

Lets have a Blast
BL's Blast Off is not about who wins but about having a blast with your family and friends and building community spirit.
