Wahu Surfer Groms Comps Announced For Summer 2011/12

SUMMER is shaping up to be better than ever for Australia\'s top ‘grommet\' surfers, with iconic Australian beach brand Wahu and Surfing Australia extending the now famous Wahu Surfer Groms Comps for a further year.

With divisions from 9 to 15 years, it is the first national tour to fully cater for the ‘micro groms\'.

The 2011/12 series has been confirmed as eight events across QLD, NSW, VIC, SA and WA with the introduction of a Wollongong based event.

The combined under 9 boy\'s and girl\'s parent assist division has also been expanded to include separate male and female divisions.

Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark said the Wahu events provide an ideal entry level introduction to competition.

"The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps are an important national junior development program for the sport of surfing," he said.

"The national ‘micro groms\' series offers kids the chance to get involved in surfing whilst also having fun on the beach with all the great Wahu beach products."

The surfer groms comps cater for the ‘micro groms\' (U/9) to the big kids alike (U/15) of any level, and is all about providing a fun, but competitive environment. There will also be loads of prizes, giveaways and cool beach games.

"We are looking forward to continuing our sponsorship of this vital grass roots development event which will now also facilitate aspiring ‘groms\' emerging from the SurfGroms program initiative to be rolled out this coming season," said Britz Marketing Australasia Managing Director Tim Britz.

Adding to the eight event series is the inclusion of a bodyboard expression session.

Also, each entrant will receive an uber-cool Wahu Surfer Groms Comp t-shirt for entering, plus go into the running to win Wahu beach products through daily award giveaways across the surfing and beach game disciplines, which state branches will be coordinating.

While there is some serious competition planned, the main objective is to get kids active and having fun.

Divisions include: U/15 boys and girls, U/13 boys and girls, U/11 boys and girls and U/ 9 boys and girls parent assist.

The opening Wahu Surfer Groms Comp event will be held on Sydney\'s northern beaches on November 5-6.
