Pringle Pops to Two Semis at the VB NSW Surfmasters State Titles Presented by Mobys

Saturday, 16 June 2012

The Annual VB NSW Surfmasters State Titles presented by Mobys, moved into its third day at Boomerang Beach today. The swell much of the east coast of NSW has been enjoying set competition off to a flying start and competitors got down to the business end of the coveted NSW Titles.

With Round 2 underway for the over 35 and over 40's, competitors battled it out for spots in the semi finals which is looking to be tough competition as it gets closer. The overcast day didn't hamper competitors who made light of the 4-5 foot waves.

"Even though the swell has dropped it's still tough out there because you have to wait, you have to be really patient. But when they do come it's on and the waves are out there, its been great so far", said over 40's competitor Glenn Pringle.

Glenn Pringle won his Round 2 heat with an impressive 8.17 wave and moves through with fellow Cronulla surfer John Shimooka who placed a close 2nd behind him. Pringle threw two big hacks onto a long wave before watching his competitors have a crack at his lead.

"I was watching Shmoo and I thought he was going to pop out and it would be over", said Pringle after watching former ASP World Tour surfer John Shimooka pop into a sneaky barrel, but only just not coming out the other side.

Pringle will face Andrew Symington (Bateau Bay) and Matt Whyte (Cronulla) in the quarters and Shmoo lines up against local surfer Bill Harrison (Old Bar) and Bret Daintry in the over 40's division.

Pringle didn't just dominate the over 40's but made his mark in the over 35's coming against Warriewood charger Grant Wall in round 2. Wall just missed out on round 2 in both divisions after his battle against Pringle in one of the final heats of the day saw Pringle move to tomorrows semi's in the over 35's.

The youngest division of the surfmasters (over 35's) shone the light on Col Bernasconi (Umina Beach). Dubbed as Mr consistent in the competition his swift youthful surfing propelled him to round 2. Once there his second place behind outstanding surfer Jake Spooner (Bulli), put the pair into the semi finals tomorrow, where they face Luke Nolan (East Corrimal) and Wayne Morrison (Port Maquarie).

Steve Walder (Verges Creek) and Dean Shaw (Fingal Bay) won their requalifying heats in the over 50's and will follow the over 45 divisions in round 2 after they open up proceedings tomorrow morning.

The event acts as the qualifier for Team NSW for the 2012 Australian Surfmasters Titles which are set to be held during the Australian Surf Festival from 11-25 August 2012.

Mobys Beachside Retreat hosted a fantastic VB BBQ dinner for competitors and families, from 6:00pm last night where competitors enoyed a slideshow of the event so far, dinner and a surf movie.
