NSW Open Surfmasters Titles
Champions crowned at NSW Open Surfmasters Titles
Saturday, 3 July 2010
Five prestigious champions were crowned today as the NSW Open Surfmasters Titles heads towards the final day of competition tomorrow.
Seeing conditions increase markedly overnight, with a pulsing south swell, excellent one-metre waves graced the picturesque contest location of Werri Beach.
Knowing the enormity of the day's results, competitors were looking at taking home one of the most prestigious trophy's in Australian surfing folklore; not too mention qualification into the Country Energy Australian Surf Festival to be held in August this year.
Despite being at the end of the competitive spectrum, the elder statesmen, and women, were in fine form, revelling in the improved conditions.
Leading the way was the Over 55 Men division who showed their skill and nous. However, when the dust settled it was the effervescent Mark Phelan (Terrigal, NSW) who added yet another state title to his impressive haul.
In the Over 45 division, Vic Levett (Manly, NSW) claimed the highest combined heat score of the final's with an impressive backhand barrage. Unleashing on the shifting peaks of North Werri Beach, Levett was rewarded for his critical approach with a total of 16.34 (out of a possible 20).
Joining Levett in the winners circle was fellow Northern Beaches counterpart Mark Gobbe (Mona Vale, NSW) who defeated Craig Naylor (Cronulla, NSW), Alex Bosanky (Double Bay, NSW) and Warren Bilbow (Norah Head, NSW), who finished second, third and fourth, respectively in the Over 50 division.
The tightest battle of the day went down in the Over 40 division with a mere tenth of a point separating first and second. But, after the results were tallied and the smoke cleared, John Schmidenburg (North Coast, NSW) took the crown from Scott Myers (Lake Munmorah, NSW) with 12.33 to 12.23 (out of a possible 20).
Rounding out the days proceedings was the Over 35 Women's division, which was dominated by Sue Levett (Manly, NSW) with an amazing heat total of 16.10 (out of a possible 20).
Tomorrow will the see the summit of the event as the final four divisions will be crowned in the Open Men, Women and Over 28 and 35 Men's divisions.
