SA Senior Shortboard State Titles Round Two
Shortboard State Titles Rd 2
Sunday, 1 April 2012
Saturday 31st March 2012 Day one of Surfing SA Shortboard State Titles at Middleton Bay saw contest running to an early close due to swell dropping to a point of being non contestable.
The anticipated Saturday night increase in swell did arrive on the mid coast, Seaford producing a quality 1 metre swell on Sunday 1/4/12 allowing the remainder of the heats and finals to be completed.
Clean off shore winds prevailed most of the morning but turned onshore with the incoming tide and this allowed Open Opens and Under 18 boys to unlease their arsenal or aeriel maneuvers that favour on shore winds.
Competitors flying high and popping fins and taking scoring risks at the start and mid point of waves were rewarded with high scores.
Open Mens finals saw Alex Rix (Victor Harbor), Wade Gyns (Morphett Vale) and David Steele (Seaford) battle it out in the arieals maneuvers. Rix’s first high scoring 8.5 points early in the final put him in a commanding position with Gyns in hot contention. Gyns posted a 7.0 point for his highest scoring wave but run out of time for his back up wave finishing in second place.
"Its nice to have contest on the mid coast, especially Seaford that can produce some high quality waves “ said Alex Rix. Wade Gnys was putting in some great surfing in the semis and pushed me to the limit in the finals.”
Under 18 boys
High scoring aerial surfing continued in the Under 18 boys finals but super light weight Kyle Imgraben (Port Noarlunga South) nudged his way to first position. Final scores tallying the two highest scoring waves in the 25 minute final scored with less than 1 point separating Kyle Imgraben (1st), Lachlan Schultz (2nd) and Sam Pike (3rd). Kyle also scored a first in under 16 division with Luke Sykora [Marion Bay [2rd]
“I love surfing Seaford” said Kyle Imgraben “it is my home break and I can ride my bike to the surf. I could see the other competitors completing some great maneuvers and it put me under a lot of pressure.”
Tayla Hanak’s (Yankalilla), clean flowing controlled turns enabled her to make two trips to the podium to claim a first in open womens and under 18 womens divisions. Scoring a convincing win in under 18’s division the open womens was tightly contested with Brinkley Davies (Moana) 2nd Alice Gilbert (Goolwa) 3rd and Georgie Thomas (Middleton) 4th. With the incoming tide causing a flat section halfway through the break competitors who could bounce their boards into remaining wave scored more points.
“I am really stocked to be able to take a first in two divisions” said Tayla. Its is a pity that the contest could not have been completed at Middleton Bay but Seaford is great surf break and it is easy to paddle out the back as the waves are more defined.”
The third and final round of the Shortboard State Titles will be held on 5th May 2012. The two highest scores out of the three rounds will determine Surfing SA national team to compete at the Australian Titles in August 2012 at Port Macquarie.
