SUP Stand UP Paddle Boards State Titles – Stand and Deliver
Middleton (Day Street) Sunday 20/5/11
Middleton Beach provided ideal surf conditions for the (SUP) Stand Up Paddleboard state titles.
Mark Temple (Yankalilla) left his mark on the score board taking first in the open Mens and Over 40’s finals.
Temple in the open mens finals spiking the paddle to push radical turns followed by controlled longboard surfing maintained his dominance in qualifiying heats posting a combined score of 14.49. taking first open mens.
In hot pursuit Rob Millington (Pt Noarlunga Sth) second with 11.73pts was unable to match the Temple's style. A tight three competitors scores followed.
The over 40’s final was a near identical roll call of the open mens finals battling it out for first placing.
With all divisions having a requalifying heat, the ability to surf a minium twice before elimination was a marathon effort for finalists, with 9 km paddle racing paying dividends in fitness.
Temple looking slightly tired but on a mission , hit the scoreboard again with total of 14.63 points with Mark Day (Hawthorn) 11.16 points second and Rob Millington nudged to third this time round.
“It’s been a great day” said Mark Temple. “We have had ideal waves, sunshine, light offshore winds and all our club members have really enjoyed the whole day.”
Consistent breaking waves 500 metres off shore proved unforgiving in the open womens semi-finals. The ten minute paddle out time encountered larger than normal waves leaving competitors little time to catch scoring waves.
Open women’s finalists with an easier paddle out saw local surfers Brigette Conlon (Seaford) first and Kym Symonds (Belair) second.
SUP Stand UP Paddle boarding has gone from strength to strength in the last 12 months” said Phill Pretty (Fuzzy) President of SA SUP Crew Club. “We have approx. 50 members with a good social calendar and also provide a pathway for elite athletes to achieve their full potential.”
We have flat water, downwind races, surf comps and social paddles winter and summer.
