Surfing SA's Midcoast Development Squad term 4 2012
Dion Atkinson visits Midcoast Development Squad & Vegemite Surfgroms
Thursday, 18 October 2012
This school term Surfing SA is running a Midcoast Development Squad for any under 18 surfer wanting to improve their surfing. The Squad is ran by the State Coaching Director and level 2 coach, Cheryl Peat and she is assisted by top state coaches & surfers Jessica Ip and Tom Bowen. For the first time a Vegemite Surfgroms program is running alongside the squad to create a pathway in which junior surfers can move from lessons to squad training. The Vegemite Surfgrom group is coordinated by Craig Potgieter & he is assisted by new coach Heath Worrall.
The squad surfers & Vegemite Surfgroms were very excited to have professional surfer Dion Atkinson attend their training last Tuesday. They were greeted by 2 - 3 foot surf which proved to be testing for some but with advice & encouragement from Dion they all tacked the surf courageously. They were even able to surf with Dion who showed all the surfers some spectacular manoeuvres. All the junior surfers had time at the end to also get Dion to sign photos & also their Vegemite Surfgrom gear.
Prizes for the night were also given out & they went to Alex Parker for his improved cutbacks, Yasmin Hardy for her determination to get out the back, Sam Kendall for his long rides & Deklin Padovani for his great wave selection. All surfers however surfed well & are looking forward to next week's session.
