Open Shortboard State Titles Round Three Presented by Coopers
SURFING SOUTH AUSTRALIA STATE TITLES ROUND THREE
Monday, 31 May 2010
(Sunday 30th May, 2010 – Seaford / South Australia): Round Three of the South Australian Shortboard State Titles presented by Coopers was held at Seaford reef on Sunday.
Winter like conditions greeted competitors and spectators for the second day of competition in this the third and final round of the South Australian Shortboard State titles.
Wave conditions had deteriorated overnight at Middleton Point and the decision was made to relocate the event to Seaford reef on the Mid South Coast. The conditions at Seaford Reef far exceeded that on offer at Middleton, providing further support for the mobile contest format.
Consistent 2ft waves were on offer for the competitors at the right hand reef break. With winds predicted to gradually improve throughout the day and an incoming tide for the afternoon the scene was set for another great day of competition.
First to hit the water was the U16 girls final. The girls looked very comfortable in the somewhat stormy conditions and impressed the crowd with some great rides. Competitor Ellie Francis who also won the U14 divisions showed the older girls she is more than a threat, taking out the final in fine style.
The under 18 boys final was one of the highlights of the day. The final saw the young men really committing themselves to every maneuver. Mitch Imgraben took out the final with an attack that will surely serve him well in the open men’s competition in future years.
The last two finals of the day saw the open men and women take to the water. An increase in swell size was predicted creating added tension amongst title hopefuls.
The Open women’s final along with the U18s final was taken out by Brinkley Davies . Brinkley was one of the most consistent surfers of the weekend placing first in four out of five competitive rounds.
Brinkley was very excited with her win and had this to say when asked about her future surfing aspirations, " I am going to be trying to fit in as much free surfing as possible and will definitely compete in the upcoming South Australian competitions." Brinkley also mentioned her plans of traveling and competing abroad when she completes year 12 at the end of this year.
With four surfers still in contention to become the open men’s state champion for 2010 it was impossible to select a firm favourite. The two opening semi-finals saw only three of the four progress with the standout from day ones competition, Brett Edwards, narrowly bowing out to Max Longhurst and David Steele.
With Teale Vanner, Max Longhurst and Todd Goudie all with a chance of claiming the state title the importance of posting two solid scores in the final was paramount. Teale Vanner however dominated from the beginning of the final with great wave choice and a wide array of critical maneuvers. With such a high performance surfing display, Teale took out the final giving him the points to seal the state championship.
Teale graciously accepted praise for his impressive surfing and had this to say about the current state of open mens surfing in South Australia, "It is really on the rise and being able to come back from international competition and have such high standard in South Australia is great."
The future for Teale Vanner is bright, with a trip to South East Asia and China planned for the near future. Teale said that he is, "excited to take time relax and soak up some culture." This open minded and well balanced approach will surely pay dividends to his surfing when he returns.
The South Australian State Titles would like to thank Coopers Brewery, The Office of Recreation and Sport, Liive Sunglasses and Far King Wax for their ongoing support.
