13th Bruny Island Classic

Wednesday, 15 February 2012

The 13th Bruny Island Classic was run & won on the weekend of the 4th & 5th of February 12, Phil and Jen did a fantastic job organising the event with $4500 of prizes.

Day 1 greeted us to 1 to 1.5 m contestable swell. Light winds & cloud @ Middle Cloudy Bay.

The “cloud @ Cloudy” soon dissipated leaving us to a glorious sunny and long day of competition.

In 2012 Surfing Tasmania has introduced a second chance draw to give competitors a few more surfs for their efforts of entering & getting to the comps, which makes for some extra heats but well received by competitors.

All the heats & requals were surfed to a high standard leaving the semis and finals for the Sunday.

Standout surfers on the Saturday were Lizzy Stokely, the re-birth of the tussle between Scott Weinreich & Phil Quirk for the 40 & 45’s, juniors Pierre Van De Vusse and Tom Gray winning their way into the open Semi’s.

On Sunday the highly anticipated 18 second swell had not arrived, but we still had 1 to 1.5 m of contestable waves on offer.

The semis were surfed very competitively and to a high standard with some very close decisions placing our tallier for the event Lee  under extreme pressure!

With $500 up for grabs for the “Tassie Motor Shacks best barrel award” every competitor was claiming their barrels making the event even more enjoyable! The $500 went to Luke Bugg.

The presso’s were held at the Hotel Bruny, who supplied a great venue and delicious snacks.

All in all the 13th Bruny Island Classic was a fantastic success!!

Many thanks must go to Phil & Jen Quirk, Head Judge Chris Collins, Mark Simpson from DC & OAM. All the judges that helped out over the weekend and Lee  (Tallier)
