Bruny Island Classic

Solid waves, offshore breezes, 33 degrees bless 12th annual Bruny Island Classic

Monday, 1 February 2010

Jy Johannesen claimed his 3rd Bruny Island open title from Luke Bugg with a narrow half point decision in idyllic 1.5-2.5 metre offshore waves at Cloudy Bay, Bruny Island.  Johannesen performances in early heats included a dynamic perfect ten point ride, the win virtually assures Jy a wildcard in to the trials of the O’Neill Coldwater Classic.

In day akin to a Queensland summer, temperatures reached 33 degrees for Australia’s most southern contest, Luke Bugg avenged his open result by taking out his second Senior Mens title.

A return to contest surfing from Chris Potter saw him take out the Masters, 2nd placed Time Stevens managed to take out his maiden Senior Masters Title.

Retiring co-contest director Richard Buczek used all his local knowledge to find waves that eluded his fellow competitors to win the Grand Masters, including a solid 8.5 ride on a 2metre wave, Legend division new comer John Kohlemainen took his maiden title.

Sam Collins and Jo Goldfinch charged everything the ocean could throw at them but Collins’ superior wave selection gave her victory in the womens. In the open B division Kelly Nordstrom edged out older competitors, to back up his 14 boys title of two weeks ago.

The Bruny Island Classic was made possible with the support of the Fosters Group Trading- Cascade, Mungermen Design and Printing, Cloudy Bay Cabin., Cape Bruny Lighthouse Accommodation, Get Shucked Oysters, Bruny Island Premium Wines.-Wayaree Estate, Red Herring Surf, Mures, John Clennett’s Mitre 10 Kingston, Bruny Island Painting and Decorating, Pure Bruny, Adventure Bay General Store, MaWee Jewellery.-Art from Glass, Lunawanna Link-Café and Store,  Rob Pennicott’s Bruny Island Cruises, HIBA The Original Tasmanian Fudge Company, Bruny Island Smoke House.

Surfing Tasmania would like to thanks Richard and Naomi Buczek who retired from there role as co-contest directors, and thank them for there efforts over the years.
