Coaching
Surfing Victoria delivers Level 1 and 2 Surf riding Coach Accreditation Course as part of the Australian Sports Commission’s National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS). These courses cover the necessary theory components of the NCAS and the sports specific practical requirements of Surfing Australia. Participants are invited to attend the course and then be required to complete the necessary theory and practical elements before becoming accredited. NCAS approved courses are recognized nationally and by some international affiliates of Surfing Australia’s Licensed Surf school Network.
Level 1 Surf riding Coach Accreditation Course requisites:
Simply attending the level 1 course and passing the exam does not entitle you to the qualification. In order for you to be a fully qualified coach there are a number of requirements that must be completed in addition to the two-day course.The following documents must be completed and returned to Surfing Victoria:
- Completed Level 1 Surf Coaching Workbook including; Surfing Australia Coach Information Card, Coaches Code of Ethics Agreement Form, Level 1 Surf Coaching Diary & Lesson Plans, Level 1 Course Exam (completed during 2 day course).
- Letter of recognition for 20 hours coaching undertaken in a Surfing Australia Surfschool
- Copy of your surf rescue certificate or equivalent bronze qualification
Please note that until these requirements have been completed, the National Coaching Council cannot accredit you as a Level 1 Coach.

Level 2 Surf riding Coach Accreditation Course requisites: Pre-requisites
- Hold a Surfing Australia Level 1 coach accreditation for 24 months
- Be fit and able to participate in Level 2 course activities and practical surf tests
- Be at least 20 years of age
- Do the 2 day course
- Hold community bronze or equivalent (in particular for those who receive RPL entrance into the course).
- Plan and implement 40 hours of coaching for a group of surfers and document this training in an assignment booklet
- Undertake an online coaching competencies course.

Judging
The International Judging and Officiating Accreditation Course
Surfing Australia Judging development courses are recognised as the only endorsed Judging Accreditation course by the Australian Sports Commission and the International Surfing Association.
The International Judging and Officiating accreditation courses are regularly being conducted in many major surfing areas around our coast line and in conjunction with our state branches.The International Judging and Officiating Course is the first step in becoming a professional surfing Judge and Official. Surfing Australia are committed to providing a clear development pathway for our aspiring and, dedicated experienced officials.
The cost of The International Judging and Officiating course is $190 per person. The course takes approximately 7 hours with participants receiving: The International Judging manual, current rule book, ID accreditation card and informative judging DVD.
Course participants are accredited on the day of the course as a “Level 1 club Judge”
A higher level accreditation pre-requisite is that course participants must complete 20 hours of judging experience, 10 hours at a club level and 10 hours at a regional/state level. The hours must be documented and signed off by a Surfing Australia accredited Head Judge and a club President.The Australian Judging register
Surfing Australia manages a database of Australian registered and accredited judges and officials.
This register will be accessed by state branches in 2010 to establish current registered officials for judging opportunities at sanctioned events.
In December, all judges that have completed The International Judging and Officiating Course are required to re-register to maintain accreditation. All accredited and registered event judges and officials are covered under Surfing Australia’s Professional Indemnity insurance.
There are currently three (3) registration levels available for Australian Judges and Officials.- Level 1 Club Judge (No hours of experience needed)
- Level 2 State Judge
- Level 3 International Judge
The International Judging register and exchange program
Surfing Australia manages the International judging register and exchange program on behalf of the ISA.
Surfing Australia utilises the International registered judges’ data base to establish current International registered judges for use at National and International events and the judging exchange program with other licensed countries.
All Australian Judges that are registered as Level 3 International Judges are eligible for the International exchange program between licensed countries.
There are currently 18 licensed countries who are members of the exchange program.
