2012 CHILL WA SCHOOL SURF TITLES - REGIONAL
Chill School Surfing Titles Kick Off Around WA
12/8/2012
The regional qualifying events have long been a breeding ground for the next crop of junior surfing talent, and the opening events of the WA School Titles didn't disappoint with many schools submitting teams of talented surfers that could go on to represent their school and their state at the Australian Junior Surfing Titles in Nubeena Beach, Tasmania in December this year.
In the Peel region, five local high schools entered teams in eight divisions. Tranby College, Comet Bay, Frederick Irwin, Mandurah Baptist and Mandurah Catholic College, took part in the event which provides a unique opportunity for male and female surfers and bodyboarders to surf with their friends and represent their school in a relaxed and fun environment. Secret Harbour provided ideal conditions with Mandurah Catholic College the best of the Peel schools, capturing four of the eight divisions being contested.
Peel regional coordinator Peter Skeggs from Frederick Irwin Anglican commented on the opening event,
"We've been running this event with the help of Surfing WA for many years now, but it days like this that make it all worthwhile, perfect conditions and a great classroom for the day." He said.
Standout surfers on the day included Harry McPherson (Mandurah Catholic College), Kai Feodorov (Mandurah Baptist College) and Aleigha-Shae Norton (Comet Bay) who along with their team mates will represent their schools at the State Final.
Friday saw the South-West regional event also take place with Margaret River Senior High School dominating the powerful waves just south of Gas Bay, winning all but two of the eight divisions on offer.
In an ominous sign for other schools, Margaret River Senior High School took the first step towards a record seventh straight WA Champion School Title with a team brimming with talent. With the likes of Jacob Willcox, Shaun Manners, Josh Burke, and Jack Teague all performing well Margaret River looked at home in the clean barrelling waves.
"It was by far some of the best waves I've seen for any School Surfing Title event. I was impressed by the performances of all students especially the outfit from Margaret River." Said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks who was on hand to witness the action.
Mutton Bird Beach in Albany hosted the Great Southern regional event also on Friday with six schools competing. Great Southern Grammar and Denmark Senior High were the best performing schools, along with Esperance Senior High who will be the most regional school to compete at the State Final, being over 700km's away from Trigg Beach.
The remaining regional title event is in Geraldton on Monday 20th for schools in the Mid-West.
The forecast for the metropolitan events which begin Monday at Trigg Beach isn't look as pleasant with strong onshore winds and winter weather forecast for the start of the week.
