CHILL WA JUNIOR TITLES RND # 2 - TRIGG

Chill WA Junior Surfing Titles Round # 2 Trigg Beach

Wednesday, 23 May 2012

The best junior surfers in Western Australia are preparing for second round of the Brownes Chill WA Junior Surfing Titles presented by SunSmart to be held at Trigg Beach this weekend

This three event series is the most important for junior surfers within the state, as they act as the sole means of qualification to compete at the Australian Junior Surfing Titles held later this year in Nubeena Beach, Tasmania.

A strong field of local contestants, plus those travelling from across the state will be looking to build on results from the opening round of competition at Gas Bay in Margaret River. Male and female divisions being contested will include: U/18, U/16, U/14 and U/12's.

Competition is set to be red hot as WA's best juniors square off for supremacy on the event ratings, in hope of becoming a state junior surfing champion.

Jacob Willcox (Margaret River) who won the blue ribbon U18 and U16 divisions in the opening event in Margaret River, it is a great time to be a junior surfer.

"I've been so lucky this year with the places I've travelled to and the waves I've been able to surf," he said.

"It's been an eye opening experience for me and I'm definitely keen to make the team that heads to Tasmania in December, as an Australian Title is one of my biggest goals for sure."

Recently returning to Western Australia after being one of ten hand picked boys by Mick Fanning to attend a week long junior coaching clinic on the East Coast, Willcox is ready to take his surfing to the next level.

"I got to see some great surfing while I was away and more importantly what it takes to really be a modern pro surfer. It's an experience I'll never forget." Willcox said.

After an awesome run of autumn conditions in the Perth metro area the forecast for the weekend is looking a little small.

"We're confident there will be enough push in the swell this weekend to see some nice little waves around." Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks said.

"It's not going to be huge, but conditions are looking ideal and will be a good opportunity for the groms to test themselves in smaller waves."

The excitement levels of competitors will be increasing as the competition draws closer with a strong field set to contest the event.

The South-West can boast an impressive new breed of surfers who are hungry for success. Lead by Jacob Willcox, the talent pool includes Margaret River's Shaun Green, Josh Burke, Hannah Massie and Shaun Manners. While Yallingup's Duke Nagtzaam, Boston Kavanagh, Kael Walsh and Eliza Greene are also pushing the development of the sport here in WA.

Perth based surfers set to use local knowledge to their advantage include Jake Edwards(Cottesloe), Nalu Keala (North Beach) and Mia McCarthy (Karrinyup) who all made impressive starts at the first event in Margaret River.

From the North-West James Fleming (Geraldton), Fletcher Cremasco (Kalbarri) and Carnarvon girls Alex Durant, and Imogen Caldwell are all capable of causing upsets.

The Brownes Chill WA Junior Surfing Titles will aim to kick off at Trigg Beach on Saturday morning at 7:30am with finals concluding on Sunday. If you missed the opening event action you can watch the event highlights package online at http://vimeo.com/39331868
