Brownes Chill WA Junior Titles Heads South To Margaret River
Wednesday, 14 April 2010
The best junior surfers in Western Australia are preparing to converge on South-West this weekend for second round of the Brownes Chill WA Junior Surfing Titles. The second stop of a three event series, these are arguably the most important junior surfing events held within WA, as they act as the sole means of qualification for those looking to compete at the Australian Junior Surfing Titles held later this year in Phillip Island, Victoria.
The Brownes Chill WA Junior Surfing Titles will light up the last weekend of the school holidays with amazing surfing from competitors keen to carve up the waves of the world famous Margaret River area. A strong field of local contestants, plus those travelling from across the state will be looking to build on results from the opening round of competition at Trigg Point.
With male and female divisions including U/18, U/16, U/14 and U/12’s, the competition is set to be red hot as WA’s best juniors square off for supremacy in the South-West.
According to Creed McTaggart (Margaret River), who recently claimed an impressive win at National Final of the Rip Curl GromSearch and placed second in the International Final, this is a great time to be a surfer living in Margaret River.
"I can't wait," he said.
"Everyone is looking forward to this weekend and the possibility of some really great waves. The waves in Perth for the first event were good, but to be able to surf at local breaks with heaps of power is what Im looking forward to most."
After recently returning from Victoria where he saw the world’s best competing at Bells Beach, McTaggart will be use this experience to improve his own surfing.
“I got to see some great surfing while I was away and I want to try to implement what I saw into my surfing.”
After a few days of wet and wild conditions right across WA, warm weather and offshore winds are forecast for the weekend along with a good ground swell which will hopefully provide all the right ingredients for a great event. The excitement levels of competitors will be increasing as the competition draws closers and many will be keen to put their school holiday surf practice to good use.
The south-west can boast an impressive new breed of surfers who are hungry for success. Lead by Creed McTaggart, the talent pool includes Jack Robinson, Jacob Wilcox, Shaun Manners, Josh Burke, as well as Bronte Macaulay and Mikaela Greene who are all at the forefront of surfing development here in WA.
Perth based surfers set to use the powerful waves of the Margaret River region to their advantage include Sam Humphry (Wembly Downs), Zac Haynes-Love (City Beach), Nalu Keala (North Beach) and Jayden O’Neil (Padbury) who all made massive starts at the first event at Trigg Point.
The North-West will also be sending surfers capable of causing an upset in Margaret River include James and Damian Fleming (Geraldton), and Kalrbarri duo of Jesse Carter and Jye Perkins.
The Brownes Chill WA Junior Surfing Titles will hopefully be held at Gas Bay with competition set to start at approximately 8.00am each day, with a competitors briefing from 7.30am.
