Brownes Chill WA Junior Surfing Titles Pres. By SunSmart - Round # 3

Final event of the Brownes Chill WA Junior Surfing Titles

Monday, 19 July 2010

The third and final round of the Brownes Chill WA Junior Surfing Titles heads north this weekend, for a huge weekend of competitive surfing for some of WA's best junior talent. The surf rich Batavia Coast will play host to what is shaping up to be one of the biggest junior surfing events in WA this year, with an extremely close ratings board keeping a lot of excitement and interests on the upcoming results.

With a very pleasant start to winter, it has been a lucky two weeks for those on school holidays with no shortage of surf to keep grommets entertained. Surfers from across the state have been using their school holiday break to sharpen their skill and prepare for this, their final chance to qualify for the Arnette Australian Junior Surfing Titles to be held in Phillip Island, Victoria later this year.

Situated four and a half hours north of Perth, Geraldton is known for its warm weather and offshore winds this time of year and will be a welcome stop for the final event of a hugely successful 2010 series. This weekend will be no exception with a good conditions forecast, along with a decent sized swell building off the north of the state, competitors must be excited about the waves that Geraldton will be serving up this weekend.

"Its been so cold down in Perth the past few weeks, and the water has finally got that winter chill to it. I think most surfers will enjoy heading north to escape the cold, especially the guys and girls from Margaret River and further south ." Said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks.

A strong field of local contestants, plus those travelling from Perth and further south will be looking to build on results from the opening two rounds of competition held at Trigg Point and Margaret River. With male and female divisions including U/18, U/16, U/14 and U/12's, the competition is set to be red hot as WA's best juniors square off for supremacy in the final chance to surf for their state before National Titles.

"Coming into the final round this is probably the closest the ratings have ever been. We've got so many WA kids surfing well now, that they're all pushing each other really hard."

"Anyone with one solid result is in a position to qualify for the state team." Commented Majeks.

It is surfers from the mid-west that will be looking to impress on home turf, with some exciting new surfers emerging from the area. Geraldton Boardriders President Leon Norris mentioned, "The new breed of Geraldton and Kalbarri surfers coming through the system is really encouraging. For a long time it was only Perth and South-West surfers that were getting recognised. Its great that finally our area is producing the champions we knew it would."

Geraldton locals Damian and James Fleming, along with Max Marsden will be the real threats in their divisions, along with Kalbarri's Jesse Carter and Jye Perkins who have both made state teams in the past.

The south-west can also boast an impressive new breed of surfers who are hungry for success. Lead by Creed McTaggart, the talent pool includes Jack Robinson, Jacob Wilcox, Shaun Manners, Josh Burke, as well as Bronte Macaulay and Mikaela Greene who are all at the forefront of surfing development here in WA.

Perth based surfers set to use the powerful waves of Geraldton region to their advantage include Zac Haynes-Love (City Beach), Nalu Keala (North Beach) Sam Humphry (Wembly Downs), and Jayden O'Neil (Padbury) who are all in a position to represent the state with a good final performance.

"its still a bit too far out to have an accurate forecast, but every time we have an event in Geraldton we're always blessed with quality surf. Im really looking forward to watching it all play out when competition bounces down at Flat Rocks on Saturday morning." Said Justin Majeks

The Brownes Chill WA Junior Surfing Titles will hopefully be held at Flat Rocks just south of Geraldton with competition set to start at approximately 8.00am each day, with a competitors briefing from 7.30am each day.
