Sleeman and Fostin take top honours in Round 2 of the Woolworths Victorian Junior Series in challenging conditions at Gunnamatta
Gunnamatta Ocean Beach/Mornington Peninsula VIC/AUS (Sunday, 11th February 2018): Taj Sleeman (Cape Paterson) and Lannia Fostin (Cape Woolamai) have claimed top honours in Round 2 of the 2018 Woolworths Victorian Junior Surfing Titles held at Gunnamatta Ocean Beach.
Faced with significant onshore conditions and a tricky rip bowl, competitors definitely had there work cut out for them all day.
The U/18 Final finished the days proceedings with natural footer and reigning 2017 Victorian U/18 State Champion Taj Sleeman taking out the win off the back off some aggressive forehand surfing.
Sleeman looked at home in the onshore conditions dropping strong scores to the sound of a 15.43 out a possible 20 point heat total.
"I'm stoked to get a win here at Gunna". Sleeman said.
"I didn't start off the series well at all, so I'm pysched to have a good comp".
Coming in 2nd gallantly with some amazing surfing was goofy footer Indi White (Jan Juc) whilst Chad Garrett (Cape Woolamai) and Cooper Downes (Jan Juc) finished in third and fourth place .
In the U/18 Girls division, it was Cape Woolamai's Lannia Fostin who triumphed in the tricky conditions.
"I'm stoked to take the win here in Round 2 of the series" Fostin said.
"The waves were really tricky and onshore, it was hard to pick where to sit".
Coming in 2nd was Angela Ball (Jan Juc) followed in close succession by Daisy Corbett (Cape Woolamai), Angelique Kefalas (Jan Juc) and Bella Wilson (Jan Juc) who filled in 3rd, 4th and 5th.
The U/16 Boys saw Codie Jeffery (Newhaven) take the win, surfing was an immense amount of power in a classy performance.
Jeffery was on fire all weekend and continued his good form throughout all of his heats right into the final.
"I'm stoked to take the win here at Gunnamatta in the Woolworths Junior State Titles". Jeffrey said.
" It was hard to pick where to sit, but I am very happy that I got some scores".
"I'm super happy go get back to back wins in the series".
The U/16 Girls was won by Poppy Corbett (Cape Woolamai) who was able to get several long right handers in the onshore conditions.
"I'm beyond stoked to get a win at the second round of the titles". Corbett said.
"Thanks to Surfing Victoria and Woolworths for a great event".
Lucy Naylor (Point Lonsdale) surfed her way to a 2nd, with Round 1 winner Sage Goldsbury (Cape Woolamai) finishing 3rd and Imogen Castle (Jan Juc) and Jazz Wylie (Jan Juc) claiming 4th and 5th respectively.
The U/14 Boys division was hotly contested with the result up in the air up until the last 2 minutes.
Prevailing with the win was Lucas Hickson (Rye) followed very closely by Paddy Hughes (Jan Juc), Tanner Reid (Jan Juc) and Malachi White (Jan Juc) who finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively in the close final.
The U/14 Girls was dominated by Round 1 Champion and reigning U/14 Australian Girls Champion Ellie Harrison (Barwon Heads) who used her knowledge of the rip bowl to take a solid win in Round 2.
In 2nd was Mia Huppatz (Jan Juc) followed by Cielle Bouvier (Jan Juc) and Sarsha Pancic (Rye).
Future Australian surfing champions will receive further help to ride the wave to success, with Woolworths expanding its commitment to the sport to include Surfing Australia’s six affiliated State branches Woolworths State Junior Surfing Titles, with 18 events to be run nationally across 6 States in 2017/18.
At each event, Woolworths will connect its store teams with the sport and celebrate the next generation of champions in local communities in each state.
