Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps Presented By Wahu Set For WA This Weekend
(TRIGG BEACH WA/AUS - Thursday 25th January 2018) - Western Australia's future surfing stars will be on show this weekend with the ninth event of the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps presented by Wahu set to splash down at Trigg Point.
After events in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland over the summer, 90 frothing grommets have signed up to compete in the two-day event which will see some of WA's most promising young surfers competing for an awesome array of prizes in and out of the water.
The Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps is the only Australian event series to cater for the increasing numbers of the country's 'micro-groms', who are set to compete in Under-8, Under-10, Under-12 and Under-14 divisions.
As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 Boys and Girls divisions from the event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Woolworths Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC).
Headlining an impressive group of young surfers competing this weekend is Jay Robinson (Dunsborough), Danny Benedetti (Margaret River), Jake Hagan (Geraldton), Dexter Payenberg (East Fremantle), Zali Hewson (Margaret River) and Lilli Cox (Margaret River), who all have their eyes on the opportunity to attend the HPC.
Strong winds and a building swell is forecast this weekend with Perth's premiere wave location Trigg Point set to be overrun by frothing grommets and their families.
“The Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps are a blast,” said Surfing WA high performance coach Mark Clift. “Whether it's a grom throwing on a coloured rash vest for the very first time, or those chasing the trip to the HPC, the event always provides a great mix of talent and participation."
Each entrant will also receive a Wahu Surfer Groms Comps presented by Woolworths t-shirt for entering, plus a Wahu beach product and there will be plenty of beach games and giveaways at each event.
Adding to the excitement on offer over the weekend is the Woolworths Fresh Wave Awards, presented to the best and fairest male and female surfers from each event. The recipients will have a high degree of sportsmanship and exhibit future surfing potential and will be awarded a $250 Woolworths voucher each.
The Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps presented by Wahu have helped to launch the careers of many of Australia's most promising junior surfers with almost 800 children set to take part in the 2017/18 event series.
Previous champions include Matt Banting, Jacob Willcox, Luke Hynd, Eli Steele, Kai Hing, Chris Zaffis, Quinn Bruce, Ellie-Jean Coffey, Macy Callaghan, Isabella Nichols, Holly Wawn and Laura Poncini.
