Surfing NSW is the sole provider of the Surfing Australia Level 1 Surf Coaching Accreditation Course in the state and conducts a number of courses per year. The two day course is a part of the Australian Sports Commissions National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS) and covers the necessary theory and practical components to become a nationally and internationally recognised surf coach/ instructor. The course is recognised across Australia and is the minimum qualification required to coach in one of the Surfing NSW licenced surf schools.

To gain your Accreditation you must:

Attend the two (2) day Surfing Australia Level One Instructing Course
Be a COMPETENT SURFER - you must pass a Surf Skills Session during the course. Please note: If you are not competent, you may fail this section & will not be able to become an accredited coach.  
Have good English skills - communication / reading / writing skills
Complete 20 hours of practical coaching (beginner level) at a Surfing NSW licenced Surf School (after completing the 2 day theory course)
Hold &  provide copies of the above certificates - 1. First Aid  2.  Ocean Safety  3. working with children check,
Hold a current Surfing NSW membership ($55.00)
Agree to and sign the Coaches Code of Ethics
Complete and return the Practical / Assessment Workbook (supplied during the course).

Your coaching accreditation will be recognised for 2 years from date of approval of complete booklet/ documents.

NOTE: your qualification does not give you the permission to coach at any beach on your own. To have any insurance coverage you must maintain your qualifications and work out of a Surfing Australia Surf School.

To attend you must 

Be a COMPETENT SURFER (please note you need to demonstrate your ability. If you fail you cannot become an accredited coach) 
16 years of age or older
Have good English communication skills - written and verbal
Hold and provide the following certificates -  First Aid - Ocean Safety Award -  Working with Children Check (paid) for every 18years & over
