The iconic Mattara Surf Classic, one of Australia’s oldest and most iconic surfing contests, is following the lead of the World Surf League by offering equal prize money for men and women in 2018.
The Mattara is one of the longest continuously running contests in Australia, with a history matched only by the Bells Beach contest.
This is your chance to add your name to a list of previous champions that reads like a who’s who of Australian surfing. Past winners include legends of the sport such as Mark Richards, Michael Peterson, Nat Young, Roger Clements, Damien Hardman and, in more recent years, pro surfers like Ryan Callinan, Drew Courtney and Philippa Anderson.
The contest will be held at South Bar Beach, a beach break that throws up a selection of good lefts and rights, with an elevated grassed area providing a panoramic view of the action for spectators and judges.
With a fat winner-takes-all first prize for the men’s and women’s open category, the 57th Mattara Surf Classic is sure to again be a hotly contested event featuring standout surfing.
Junior boys (under 16) will also be contested with an additional prize for the best-performed junior girl. Prize money in all divisions will be announced shortly.
Nic Squiers (men)
Philippa Anderson (women)
Mike Clayton-Brown (under 16 boys)
Due to the forecast for adverse weather and surf conditions on Sunday, we have decided to condense the event to one day in order to give competitors the best conditions possible.
The entire event will now be run on Saturday 27th October, with the first heat to hit the water at 7am sharp. We expect the event will run until about 4.30pm.
Just to confirm - there will be NO surfing on Sunday.
The event will start and conclude on Saturday 27th October.
At this stage, Merewether looks like having the best conditions along the strip, but we will check the forecast again on Friday and confirm the venue with you by email - keep an eye on the Surfing Newcastle Facebook page for details, a heat draw will also be posted on the Facebook book page.
