CHAMPIONS CROWNED AS DAY THREE OF BIG 4 AUSTRALIAN BODYBOARD TITLES SHIFTS TO CUDGEN.
Action continued at the Australian Surf Festival at Cudgen today, with five BIG4 North Star Australian Bodyboard Titles winners crowned on the penultimate day of competition.
In punchy two-foot waves, Australia’s top bodyboarders battled it out across over 45, open women’s, over 35, drop knee and grommet finals.
The opening final saw the over 45 division hit the water with Tasmanian Karl Gol (TAS) snatching a last wave victory in the second of two, 5-person finals. Gol won both over 45 final heats with a combined total of 19.5pts to defeat Justin Becker (Qld), Graeme Ellis (QLD), Greg Purtle (QLD) and Paul Mace (NSW).
Queenlander Britt Ladley (QLD) put on a dominating display in the open women’s finals, posting a 25.3pt combined total (across two finals) to beat fellow Queenslander Rachel Summers (QLD), Millie Chalker(NSW), Taylor Jackson (QLD) and Melanie Kelly (QLD).
In the over 35 final, Justin Kirkpatrick (VIC) used superior wave choice to accrue a two-wave total of 11.00pts to best Mauricio Abrunhosa (NSW), Jason Trims (QLD) and Matt Foster (QLD).
The drop knee final saw Gary Thatcher (QLD) lead from start to finish in the 25-minute heat, posting 7.5pts and a 5.25pts on his opening two waves to take a National Title from Rory Nelson (WA), Matt Sullivan (NSW) and Scott Kitchen (NSW).
The last final of the day saw the grommet division duke it out in their second of two finals. With scores accumulated across both finals, it was Brandyn Cruickshank (NSW) who took out the National title with a win in final one and a second in final two. Max McGregor (WA), Sam Giddy (NSW) and Holden Ross (WA) finished second to fourth respectively.
The BIG4 North Star Australian Bodyboard Titles will wrap up tomorrow with the remaining finals to be completed. The final day of competition also signals the completion of the 2017 Australian Surf Festival.
