2017 HIF Masters & Women's series finale kicks off tomorrow

The stage is set for an exciting series finale at the HIF Masters & Women’s this weekend on the Gold Coast. The second and final event is set to kick off tomorrow morning and will see State Champions crowned across eight divisions on Sunday afternoon, including the Blue Ribbon Open Women’s division.

The race continues for those vying for a prestigious Queensland Open Women’s title in 2017, with the addition of a 2018 Roxy Pro wild card spot going to this year’s winner. The star studded line up of Queensland’s best female surfers will see Sophie McCulloch (Alexandra Headland, QLD) aiming for her second win of the series to secure her 2017 title campaign. With only a handful of ratings points separating her and Gold Coast up and comer Piper Harrison (Coolangatta, QLD), McCulloch’s job will not be easy this weekend. Harrison goes into event two with a home ground advantage and strong competition momentum after a second placed finish at event one on top of various podium results in Pro Junior events this year.

“It would be so exiting to get the wild card spot this year, for me it’s a really big opportunity,” said Harrison.

Closely following McCulloch and Harrison are Sunshine Coast surfers Holly Williams (Buddina, QLD) and Siena Hanna (Twin Waters, QLD), who are both within arms reach of victory in 2017.

In the Over 35 Men’s division, Sunshine Coast local Andrew Doyle (Kuluin, QLD) leads the chase going into this weekend’s series finale. Doyle will be a favourite amongst the punters, closely followed by Gold Coasters Mark ‘Richo’ Richardson (Palm Beach, QLD) and Damien Healy (Broadbeach, QLD) for what could boil down to a coast versus coast battle for the title. Richardson and Healy are also sitting at the top of the Over 40 Men’s division ratings and will again go head to head this weekend as they compete for a Queensland Title across two divisions.

The 2017 HIF Masters and Women’s series is the exclusive pathway for those vying for state team selection to represent Queensland at the 2017 Australian Surfing Festival on the Tweed Coast in July/August. The Open Women’s series winner will also receive a wild card spot for the opportunity to compete against the world’s best female surfers at the World Surf League 2018 Roxy Pro trials at Snapper Rocks.
