2017 Queensland Championship Circuit series finale set to kick off this weekend at the MP Classic
The final stop of Surfing Queensland’s premier event series the Queensland Championship Circuit (QCC) will kick off this weekend at the 2017 Michael Peterson Classic (MP Classic). The event will see some of Queensland’s best Open Men’s surfers compete for a much sought after Queensland Title and a wild card spot at the World Surf League Championship Tour 2018 Quiksilver Pro trials at Snapper Rocks.
After two successful QCC events in May, the race is well and truly on for those vying for precious ratings points at the final stop of the series. With the stage set for a huge final event at Queensland’s surfing mecca the Gold Coast, organisers are hopeful of running at the preferred location of iconic Kirra Point.
Current QCC series leader James Woods (Elanora, QLD) will be looking to claim his second win for the year this weekend to cement his place on the leaderboard as he goes up against younger brother Thomas Woods (Elanora, QLD) who trails in third place. With one event win each up their sleeves, it will come down to the wire between the two as Thomas looks to claim his second Queensland Open Men’s Title in as many years.
“There’s always such a strong field of surfers in our QCC series each year and with ratings being so close, it won’t be easy for anyone this weekend,” said Surfing Queensland CEO Adam Yates.
“After an excellent run of swell on the Gold Coast so far this month, we’ve got our fingers crossed for waves this weekend.”
Sitting closely in second place in the series ratings is Coolangatta local Mitch Parkinson. With two podium finishes in the first two QCC events in May, Parkinson will go into the final stop at home as one of the punters favourites for 2017.
Joining the field of elite surfers in this weekend’s event are up and coming young guns Tane Bowden (Tweed Heads, NSW), Noah Stocca (Peregian Beach, QLD), Toi Tanaka (Palm Beach, QLD), Hinata Aizawa (Palm Beach, QLD) and Maddy Job (Burleigh Heads, QLD) who will all be looking to prove themselves against the older, more experienced surfers in Queensland.
In previous years, the MP classic has attracted the likes of World Surf League Championship Tour athletes such as Bede Durbridge, Adam Melling and Mitch Crews.
