2017 Woolworths QLD Junior Titles presented by World Surfaris hits the Gold Coast tomorrow

Over 60 of Queensland’s best junior surfers under the age of 18 will converge on the Gold Coast this weekend for the first event of the 2017 Woolworths Queensland Junior Titles presented by World Surfaris.

A short range forecast shows an increasing southerly swell combining with light to variable southerly winds to provide suitable conditions for Gold Coast beach breaks. This weekend’s event will run over two days and is competitors first chance to secure valuable series ratings points towards a Queensland Title and a spot in the state team set to compete at nations later this year, with the series wrapping up on at event two on the Sunshine Coast in October. The 18 & Under Boy’s and Girl’s division winners will also receive the opportunity to surf against the world’s best at the 2018 World Surf League Championship Tour (WSL) Quiksilver and Roxy Pro trials at Snapper Rocks.

Sunshine Coast local Cooper Davies (Noosa Heads, QLD) will look to carry his competitive form through this weekend in the blue ribbon Under 18 Boy’s division after taking out the 2017 QLD School Titles in July. Davies will face a stacked line up of Queensland’s best up and comers including Burleigh Heads young gun Maddy Job, with the pair set to meet in their round one heats. Job finished second in the series last year and is back in 2017 with another year of competitive experience under his belt. Joining Davies and Job this weekend will be top Sunshine Coast seeds Alister Reginato (Alexandra Headland, QLD) and Noah Stocca (Peregian Beach, QLD).

The Under 18 Girl’s division will see 2017 Open Women’s Champion Piper Harrison (Coolangatta, QLD) kick things off in the first heat of the round. Harrison took out the Under 16 Girl’s division in 2016 and will be looking to claim back to back victories this year. Harrison will face fellow Coolangatta local Laticia Josephson in her first heat where the two will battle it out for a spot in Sunday’s semi finals. Representing the Sunshine Coast contingent in the Under 18 Girl’s will be Amber Dods (Sunrise Beach, QLD) and Sammy Lee (Buderim, QLD), who will also go into the first event of the series as two of the favourites.

The Under 16 Boy’s division will also see a star studded line up of some of the best junior surfers in the country including 2016 Under 14 Boy’s Champion Cameron MacDougall (Little Mountain, QLD) and runner up Archer Curtis (Palm Beach, QLD). Joining MacDougall and Curtis in their 2017 Queensland Title pursuit will be top Gold Coast surfers Jay Occhilupo (Elanora, QLD) and Blake Ireland (Coolangatta, QLD).

2016 Under 14 Champion Raya Campbell (Coolangatta, QLD) will lead the chase in the 16 & Under Girl’s division this weekend. Campell’s work will not be easy however, as she faces Sunshine Coast surfer Holly Williams (Buddina, QLD) who is coming off the back of some excellent results so far in 2017. Other notable names in the Under 16 Girl’s include Jasmine Kama (Elanora, QLD), Shaye Leeuwendal (Currumbin, QLD).

Future Australian surfing champions will receive further help to ride the wave to success, with Woolworths expanding its commitment to the sport to include Surfing Australia’s six affiliated State branches Woolworths State Junior Surfing Titles, with 18 events to be run nationally across 6 States in 2017/18.

At each event, Woolworths will connect its store teams with the sport and celebrate the next generation of champions in local communities in each state.
