2018 Woolworths Queensland Grommet Surfing Titles champions crowned tomorrow on the Gold Coast
The stage is set for the final event in the prestigious 2018 Woolworths QLD Grommet Surfing Titles series, which will be held tomorrow (Saturday, 15th September) on the Gold Coast. The event will see four new Queensland grommet champions crowned in the under 12 boys/girls divisions, and the under 14 boys/girls divisions. The forecast predicts a 1-2ft Easterly swell with light winds to greet competitors for a 7 am start, with the precise competition location being decided on the day - dependant on conditions.
Last year’s under 14 boys champion Ty Richardson (Palm Beach, QLD) currently leads the ratings in the same division, after his strong performance at the first event on the Sunshine Coast. Richardson is closely followed by Matt Boyle (Currumbin Waters, QLD), Ashton Pignat (Mount Coolum, QLD), and Braxton Holmstrom (Buddina, QLD) respectively in the ratings. Boyle came close to victory at the last event, trailing by only 0.47 points in the final behind Richardson.
Last year’s under 14 girls runner-up Grace Kama (Elanora, QLD) currently leads the ratings in the same division, after taking first place in the division at the first event. “The Gold Coast event should be good because I know the beaches a lot better,” said Kama. Closely following in the ratings are Charlotte Mulley (Miami, QLD), last year’s under 14 girls champion Lilliana Bowery (Tewantin, QLD) and Jahly Stokes (Buddina, QLD).
Rico Haybittle (Burleigh Heads, QLD) leads the under 12 boys division and is looking forward to surfing this weekend after being chaired up the beach at the first event by his Burleigh Boardrider clubmates. Haybittle leads Landen Smales (Noosa Heads, QLD), Scott Arderne (Tugun, QLD) and Isaac Markwell (Sunrise Beach, QLD) respectively in the ratings.
Stella Green (Buddina, QLD) will be making the trip down from the Sunshine Coast as she currently leads the ratings in the under 12 girls division, two weeks after her win at the prestigious Billabong Parko’s Grom Stomp in Currimundi – she is definitely a name to keep an eye on this Saturday. Green leads Oli Taylor (Peregian Beach, QLD), Jordy Halford (Currumbin Waters, QLD) and Pipi Taylor (Peregian Beach, QLD) respectively in the ratings.
“The Woolworths Queensland Grommet Titles series is a huge stepping stone for Queensland’s young surfers, as you can see in the calibre of past winners,” said Surfing Queensland CEO Adam Yates. “We’re incredibly excited to crown our Queensland Grommet champions this Saturday.”
The series is a key stepping stone in Surfing Queensland's development pathway, with the likes of Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson and Bede Durbidge just a few of the high profile athletes who have previously competed in the series.
