2018 Woolworths Queensland Grommet Surfing Titles wrap up this Saturday on the Gold Coast

Preparations are well underway for the final event of the prestigious 2018 Woolworths QLD Grommet Titles, which will be held this Saturday the 15th September on the Gold Coast. After a huge day of surfing at the first event on the Sunshine Coast, competition is heating up for Queensland’s grommets this Saturday as four new state champions are crowned.

Ty Richardson (Palm Beach, QLD) currently leads the ratings in the under 14 boys division, after his exceptional performance at the first event. Richardson is closely followed by Matt Boyle (Currumbin Waters, QLD), Ashton Pignat (Mount Coolum, QLD), and Braxton Holmstrom (Buddina, QLD) respectively in the ratings. Richardson took the state title for the same division last year and is eager to get another grommet title under his belt.

Grace Kama (Elanora, QLD) currently leads the ratings in the under 14 girls division, after taking first place in the division at the first event. Closely following in the ratings are Charlotte Mulley (Miami, QLD), Lilliana Bowery (Tewantin, QLD) and Jahly Stokes (Buddina, QLD).

Rico Haybittle (Palm Beach, QLD) leads the under 12 boys division and is looking forward to surfing this weekend. Stella Green (Buddina, QLD) will be making the trip down from the Sunshine coast as she currently leads the ratings in the under 12 girls division, two weeks after her win at the prestigious Billabong Parko’s Grom Stomp in Currimundi – she is definitely a name to keep an eye on this Saturday.

“The Woolworths Queensland Grommet Titles series is a huge stepping stone for Queensland’s young surfers, as you can see in the caliber of past winners,” said Surfing Queensland CEO Adam Yates. “We’re incredibly excited to crown our Queensland Grommet champions this Saturday.”

The long-range forecast shows an Easterly swell hanging around for the weekend, which should greet competitors for an early start.

The series is a key stepping stone in Surfing Queensland's development pathway, with the likes of Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson and Bede Durbidge just a few of the high profile athletes who have previously competed in the series.
