2019 Masters Surf Series Presented by Nusa Cana Rum to Kick Off This Weekend on the Gold Coast

Some of Queensland’s most experienced surfers will throw on a competition rash shirt this Saturday and Sunday for event one of the 2019 Masters Surf Series presented by Nusa Cana Rum, to be held on the Gold Coast.

The first event in the two event series will see short boarders from the over 35 division all the way through to the Over 60’s battle it out for a Queensland Title and a place in the national titles at the 2019 Australian Surf Festival to be held on the Tweed Coast later in the year.

The Masters Surf Series presented by Nusa Cana Rum has a long history in Queensland and has provided a pathway many Australian Champions. Last years Over 45 Men’s division Australian Champion Mark Richardson (Palm Beach, QLD) will be competing again this year, and will definitely be a name to keep an eye on.

“It was great to take out the over 45 division last year,” said Richardson. “I always look forward to the masters series, it’s a lot of fun surfing with all your mates - that’s the best part. Competitive surfing keeps us on our toes, as we get a little bit older.”

Last years Over 35 Women’s Queensland Champion Lee Cooper (Upper Coomera, QLD) will be competing in the series this year, after being named state champion in 2018. After being crowned State Champion, she went on to achieve second place at the national titles.

“I think it’s important to have a masters surf series,” said Cooper. “There’s so much going on with all the great up and coming kids, so it’s awesome that the masters divisions still have the same opportunities to compete with each other.”

Last year’s over 60 Men’s division Australian Champion Bruce Dunne (Coolum Beach, QLD) will also be competing in the event and has his eyes set on Victory once again.

“I was very pleased to win two state titles in two different divisions last year,” said Dunne. “I’m having the time of my life at the moment. Still surfing my short board, I’ve just got a new one in preparation for the Masters series. Hopefully the waves turn on fur us, it’s always a great bunch of people who surf in this series.”

“The Masters Surf Series presented by Nusa Cana Rum is one of Surfing Queensland’s most hotly contested event series’. Each year we see such a high calibre of surfers in these events and that makes for a strong team at nationals. I have no doubt that 2019 will be no exception,” said Surfing Queensland CEO Adam Yates.

The 2019 Masters Surf Series presented by Nusa Cana Rum is the exclusive pathway for surfers opting to represent Queensland at the Australian Surf Festival, set to run later in the year. Each surfer’s best two of two results will be accumulated, with overall series champions crowned at Event 2 on the Sunshine Coast in June.
