2019 Red Bull Airborne Trials To Kick off Tomorrow on the Gold Coast
The trials for the 2019 Red Bull Airborne event are set to kick off tomorrow on the Gold Coast, with a 2ft (0.6 meter) swell predicted and southerly winds / rainy weather accompanying.
The Red Bull Airborne event returns to the main stage in 2019 and for the first time ever will feature a stop on the Gold Coast at this year’s World Surf League Championship Tour Quiksilver and Boost Mobile Pro at Snapper Rocks.
Red Bull’s aerial based surfing competition is giving Queensland locals a chance to compete amongst the top aerial surfers in the world, with a spot in the event being allocated to the winner of tomorrow’s trials event. The state’s top boardrider clubs have been asked to put forward one surfer each to battle it out in a round of 18.
The top surfer from the trials event (1) will secure themselves a place in the main event (April) where they will go head to head with some of the best aerial surfers in the world such as Jack Freestone (AUS), Noa Deane (AUS), Italo Ferreira (BRA), Gabriel Medina (BRA) and Felipe Toledo (BRA).
This unique contest was co-developed by ex Tweed Heads raised ex WSL Championship Tour surfer Josh Kerr in a bid to provide surfers and fans with an exciting new spectacle.
“It’s great to do a stand-alone trials event for the Gold Coast,” said Kerr. “It gives some of the younger and underground surfers of Queensland a chance to show the world what they’ve got.”
“The format is the same as the main event, to be held in April. It’s semi-derived from a ‘jam’ format in skateboarding. I wanted to bring that excitement into a surfing event.”
2018 Red Bull Airborne winner Yago Dora said, “Airs are the future of the sport,” expressing the importance of this type of competition.
Building on the success of last year’s event in France, the series will feature three stops this year including the Gold Coast, Bali and France.
