Agnes Point provides for day one of the annual HIF Agnes Water Surf Festival

Competitors were greeted with fun, walling 2ft (1m) waves for day one of competition at the 2018 Agnes Water Surf Festival.

Today’s round of competition saw the first round in 11 of the 16 divisions wrapped up across shortboarding, longboarding and stand up paddleboarding setting the bar high for the remaining two days.

The action kicked off early with the Blue Ribbon Open Men’s division the first in the water where reigning Champion Jarrod Sunderland (Peregian Springs, QLD) remained busy to dominate his first heat and progress through to Sunday’s final. Fellow Sunshine Coast surfer Kasey Lane (Buddina, QLD) was also on fire with a number of critical backside re-entries seeing him awarded the highest single wave score of the day, a near perfect 9.00 (out of a possible 10.00).

The Under 12 Boy’s division continued the action and was the highlight of the junior age groups with Sunshine Coast based surfers Landen Smales (Noosa Heads, QLD) and Kodi Dellit (Mount Coolum, QLD) both ripping in their opening heats. Both surfers connected their turns well and demonstrated rail transitions far beyond their age to be rewarded with scores in the excellent range (8.00 – 10.00).

As the tide ran out early in the afternoon the Over 35 Men’s longboard division were quick to take advantage of the long walls breaking down the point. Tim Castwood (Coolum Beach, QLD) provided the entertainment for those on the beach with a mixture of modern and traditional longboarding .Castwood executed some smooth nose riding and carving maneuvers to safely secured himself a place in Sunday’s final.

Two time HIF Agnes Water Surf Festival Open Women’s SUP Champion and current Queensland Junior SUP Surfing Champion Brea Wright (Bagara, QLD) made her mark early in the heat and impressed the judges with some excellent rail work and powerful snapping maneuvers. Wright looked relaxed in the water as she locked in a 9.00 and an 8.17 to see her secure one of the highest two wave totals of the day, a 17.17.

Competition will resume tomorrow for day two at 8:00am with the Over 35 Men’s Shortboard.
