Champions crowned in peaky conditions at the 2018 Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp presented by Wahu

The Spit saw an action packed day of surfing today for the final day of competition at the 2018 Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp presented by Wahu on the Gold Coast. Seven individual champions were crowned as the groms revelled in peaky 1-2ft (.5-1m) waves.

After a blistering performance over the past two days, Touma Cameron (Suffolk Park, QLD) continued his form through to the final siren in the Under 14 Boy’s division against a stacked line up of some of the countries best up and coming surfers. With an early 6.67 (out of a possible 10.00) backed up by a heat topping 8.67, Cameron continued to demonstrate some explosive on rail surfing to hold off Matt Boyle (Currumbin Waters, QLD), Gus Chaffe (Merewether, NSW) and Duke Wrencher (Coorabella, NSW) who finished respectively.

“I’ve been coming to these Surfer Groms comps for years, I remember competing for the first time when I was 8 years old and I had a shocker so it’s epic to get a win today,” said Cameron.

In the Under 14 Girl’s final a close match up saw Cali Barret (Banora Point, NSW) take the lead early on and manage to maintain the lead to overcome Lilliana Bowrey (Tewantin, QLD), Coral Fujino (Palm Beach, QLD) and Charlotte Mulley (Miami, QLD) who finished accordingly. Barrett was lightning fast on her feet and demonstrated skill far beyond her years, proving too hard to beat with two 7.00 point rides up her sleeve.

As runner up in the Under 14’s divisions, Bowrey and Boyle have both received an invite to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Woolworths Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC) as the respective winners had already qualified for the camp through previous events on the series.

The Under 12 Boy’s final saw some nail biting action and proved to be one of the most entertaining heats of the contest. Harry O’brien (Skennars Head, NSW) demonstrated some powerful turns to earn himself a 7.87 with just minutes left on the clock to take the lead from Dane Henry (Fingal Head, NSW) in what was a very close exchange between the pair.

Tweed Heads based surfer Quincy Symonds proved to the crowded beach why she is one of the best junior surfers in the country, taking out both the Under 10 Girl’s and Under 12 Girl’s divisions. Symonds was on fire in both finals, with intelligent wave selection and a broad variety of manoeuvres seeing her awarded the highest single wave score of the day, a near perfect 9.27.

Symonds joined Cameron in taking out the Woolworths Fresh Wave award for the overall stand out performers of the week. Both surfers received a $250 Woolworths Voucher.

The Under 8 Mixed division saw the competitions youngest athletes take to the water in style. With each competitor accompanied by a parent in the line up. the tiny tackers division saw the judges award some big scores for some excellent surfing, with Lucas Deffenti claiming two 7.00 rides to seal the deal over Mason Lewis (Burleigh Heads, QLD), Keke Brain (Lennox Head, NSW) and Beau Colless (Burleigh Heads, QLD).
