Competition wrapped up for day one at the HIF Masters & Women’s series finale at Duranbah Beach

Competitors were greeted with clean peaky waves in the 2-3ft (1-1.5m) range that improved throughout the day at Duranbah Beach for day one of the HIF Masters and Women’s on the Gold Coast. A high scoring day of competition has set the bar for a huge day of finals on Sunday where eight Queensland champions will be crowned.

It was the Blue Ribbon Open Women’s division that kicked things off for the day with some high caliber surfing. In what was a very stacked line up of contenders, it was the top seeded experienced surfers who came out on top today with Sophie McCulloch (Alexandra Headland, QLD), Ebony Wilson (Elanora, QLD) and Angie Adler (Bilinga, QLD) all winning their heats and progressing through to tomorrow’s semi finals. With the best two of two event results being combined, it will be a tight race to the finish for the state’s best female surfers tomorrow. After a first placed finish at event one, McCulloch is sitting at the top of the leaderboard and goes into tomorrow’s finals as the event favourite.

The over 35 Men provided the entertainment for the morning with some nail biting heats that came down to the dying seconds. Gold Coast local Damien Healy (Broadbeach, QLD) left his semi final campaign until late in the heat, needing a 4.23 (out of a possible 10.00) to finish second to progess, Healy locked into a fast right hander that he raced down the line to finish with a vertical fins free snap turn that the judges rewarded with a 4.67 as the final siren sounded.

“I just sat there the whole heat then got very lucky at the end with that one. I’m looking forward to tomorrow and as long as we all get waves then it’s a bit of fun,” said Healy.

There were fireworks in the Over 45 Men’s division where Gold Coaster Jason Frost (Palm Beach, QLD) was unbeatable after posting a near perfect combination score of 19.40 (out of a possible 20.00). Two long waves with a series of high speed, flaring forehand snaps saw Frost impress the judges to claim the two highest single wave scores of the day, a 9.77 and a 9.63. After a stellar performance today, Frost will now go into tomorrow’s semi final as the favourite amongst the punters.

“The set waves weren’t running on that tide so I picked up a few medium sized ones and got lucky. My strategy was if the wave keeps going, then keep doing turns,” said Frost.

“If I don’t make the final I’d like to finish with the highest wave score of the comp.”

Competition will resume tomorrow at 8.00am with location to be determined in the morning. Sunday afternoon’s finals will see state champions crowned and the 2017 Queensland Surfing Team allocations made across eight divisions. The winner of the 2017 Queensland Open Women’s division will again receive the opportunity to surf against the world’s best, with a 2018 Roxy Pro wild card spot going to the top female surfer in the state this year.
