Event one champions crowned at the 2017 Woolworths QLD Junior Titles presented by World Surfaris

Four individual champions have been crowned at the first event of the 2017 Woolworths Queensland Junior Titles presented by World Surfaris in pumping conditions on the Gold Coast. Jaggar Bartholomew (Coolangatta, QLD) took out the blue ribbon Under 18 Boy’s division and Piper Harrison (Coolangatta, QLD) was victorious in the Under 18 Girl’s division.

With some extremely close heats throughout the day, the blue ribbon Under 18 Boy’s final was no exception and saw an exciting blow for blow battle between four of the best junior surfers in Australia. Jaggar Bartholomew (Coolangatta, QLD), Thomas Carvalho (Coolangatta, QLD), Kai Tandler (Coolangatta, QLD) and Alister Reginato (Alexandra Headland, QLD) each gave it their all until the final siren sounded, but it was Bartholomew who held his own to take the win. Bartholomew was on fire throughout the day and demonstrated an impressive combination of powerful rail work and electric fast snaps to claim a heat topping 7.10 to hold off the field.

“I started off with a 6.00, then got a 7.00 but for the last eight minutes I was kinda freaking out having second priority with Thomas only needing a 6.00,” said Bartholomew.

“I’ve been doing a heap of training at the High Performance Centre which has helped with style and technique and really perfecting every maneuver. I’m off to the World Titles next week so this was a great warm up.”

The young gun will now go into the final stop of the series on the Sunshine Coast in October as one of the favourites.

The Under 18 Girl’s final saw an outstanding performance from Gold Coast surfer and 2017 Queensland Open Women’s Champion Piper Harrison (Coolangatta, QLD). With some huge forehand hacks on the prevailing right handers on offer, Harrison earned herself a heat topping 8.67 (out of a possible 10.00) and with a 7.17 also up her sleeve she put the field of contenders in a combination situation, where each surfer was left needing more than a perfect 10.00 ride to take the lead.

“The waves were super fun today, there were some good double ups coming through. I’d love to be Queensland champ again this year but all the girls were ripping so we’ll just have to wait and see,” said Harrison.

Amber Dods (Sunrise Beach, QLD), Sammy Lee (Buderim, QLD) and Sasha Baker (Mudjimba, QLD) all surfed exceptionally well throughout the weekend and finished respectively.

The Under 16 Boy’s final saw a close battle that came down to the wire with Josh Grange (Burleigh Heads, QLD), Taj Stokes (Buddina, QLD), Zane Assink (Yaroomba, QLD) and Cameron MacDougall (Little Mountain, QLD) all surfing very well and fighting it out for a first placed finish. In the end it was Grange who was victorious and now goes into event two on the Sunshine Coast at the top of the series leaderboard.

In the Under 16 Girl’s final, Raya Campbell (Coolangatta, QLD) continued her recent hot streak to claim victory over Holly Williams (Buddina, QLD), Shaye Leeuwendal (Currumbin, QLD) and Ellia Smith (Coolum Beach, QLD). Campbell was one of the stand out’s of the weekend and has well and truly proved herself to be one of the best junior surfers in the state.

The winners of the 2017 Woolworths Queensland Junior Titles presented by World Surfaris in the Under 18 Boy’s and Under 18 Girl’s divisions will receive the opportunity to surf against the world’s best at the 2018 World Surf League Championship Tour Quiksilver and Roxy Pro trials at Snapper Rocks.

Future Australian surfing champions will receive further help to ride the wave to success, with Woolworths expanding its commitment to the sport to include Surfing Australia’s six affiliated State branches Woolworths State Junior Surfing Titles, with 18 events to be run nationally across 6 States in 2017/18.

At each event, Woolworths will connect its store teams with the sport and celebrate the next generation of champions in local communities in each state.
