Finalists Decided on Day One of Woolworths Surfer Grom Comp presented by Pic’s Peanut Butter on the Gold Coast
Finalists have been decided across several divisions today at the eighth event of the 2018/19 Woolworths Surfer Grom Comps Series presented by Pic’s Peanut Butter at the Spit (Main Beach) on the Gold Coast. Competitors were stoked to be greeted with clean 3-4ft (1-1.5m) waves from a lingering East / Northeast swell, which had the Spit pumping all day. The wind remained light for competition today which both competitors and organisers were ecstatic about.
In the under 14 boys division, Gold Coast local Ty Richardson (Palm Beach, QLD) smashed through his round one heat, combining a 9.33 (out of a possible 10.00) and an 8.70 for an excellent heat total of 18.03 (out of a possible 20.00) to progress. Richardson was crowned 2018 Queensland Grommet champion in the under 14 boys division last year and looks to be maintaining fine form for the 2019 season. Richardson earned himself the Air Asia ‘Wave of the Day’ for his efforts. Other standout names in the under 14 boys division included Max Deffenti (Miami, QLD), Riley Munro (Tweed Heads, NSW), Sam McDonald (Burleigh Heads, QLD), Dane Henry (Fingal Head, NSW) and Kyan Falvey (Cabarita, NSW).
Standout names in the under 14 girls division include Jahly Stokes (Buddina, QLD), Coco Cairns (Tewantin, QLD) and Cali Barrett (Banora Point, NSW). Stokes managed to score a 7.17 combined with a 6.43 for a combined heat total of 13.60 to defeat Quincy Symonds (Tweed Heads, NSW) and Charli Pell (Tallebudgera, QLD) respectively in her round one heat.
Rico Haybittle (Burleigh Heads, QLD) impressed the judges in his round one heat, putting together a combined heat total of 14.44. Other standout names in the under 12 boys division included Joel Emery (Angourie, NSW) and Xennex Holmstrom (Buddina, QLD). In the under 12 girls division, Jordy Halford (Currumbin, QLD) shone brightly in the excellent conditions, along with Ocea Curtis (Lennox Head, NSW) and Quincy Symonds.
Hunter Anderson (Moffat Beach, QLD), Lucas Deffenti (Miami, QLD), Shey Halford (Currumbin, QLD) and Guy Henry (Fingal Head, NSW) were standouts in the under 10 boys division, all displaying surfing well beyond their years. Henley Smith (Suffolk Park, NSW), Laney Stokes (Buddina, QLD), Indy Slattery (Currumbin Waters, QLD) and Leihani Kaloha Zoric (Byron Bay, NSW) shone in the under 10 girls division.
Lucas Deffenti and Henley Smith also topped their under 8 mixed division round one heats, almost doubling their closest trailing competitors – Smith topping the division with a total of 11.16.
