Micro-Grommet Champions Crowned on Final Day of Woolworths Surfer Grom Comp presented by Pic’s Peanut Butter on the Gold Coast
Dane Henry (Tweed Heads, NSW) and Cali Barrett (Banora Point, NSW) have taken top honours today at the eighth event of the 2018/19 Woolworths Surfer Grom Comps Series presented by Pic’s Peanut Butter at the Spit (Main Beach) on the Gold Coast. Competitors were greeted with glassy and clean 3-4ft (1-1.5m) waves from a lingering East / Northeast swell, which once again saw the Spit pumping all day after the event kicked off at 7:30 am.
Dane Henry dominated in the under 14 boys division, defeating Ty Richardson (Palm Beach, QLD), Xavier Bryce (Mona Vale, NSW) and Dom Thomas (Swansea, NSW) respectively in the final. Henry scored a 7.93, backed up with a 6.17 for a combined heat total of 14.10 to take the lead in the final four minutes of the heat – and managed to keep his lead until the final siren. Henry was ecstatic as he was chaired up the beach by friends and family.
"I'm super happy with my result today," said Henry. "It's my first big result in a while so it feels great to be back on the podium again. Thanks to everyone involved, I'm stoked."
Cali Barrett won in the under 14 girls division, scoring a 7 combined with a 7.3 for a total heat score of 14.30 - defeating Jahly Stokes (Buddina, QLD), Coco Cairns (Tewantin, QLD) and Bonnie Hills (Mullaway, NSW) respectively in an exciting and close final.
“The waves were pretty fun today,” said Barrett. “I want to thanks all my friends for being here today, and all of my sponsors.”
Rico Haybittle (Burleigh Heads, QLD) won the under 12 boys division in one of the most exciting heats of the day. Haybittle defeated Keenan Crisp (Ballina, NSW), Joel Emery (Angourie, NSW) and Xennex Holmstrom (Buddina, QLD) respectively in the final. Haybittle led most of the heat, and in the last minute Crisp scored an 8.10 – but unfortunately, the wave wasn’t enough to take the lead, and Crisp was defeated by only 0.1 of a point.
“I was pretty nervous when he got that wave,” said Haybittle. “I was so stoked when I heard the scores being read out and I found out that I won. I’m super happy.”
Shyla Short (Austinmer, NSW) has claimed first place in the under 12 girls division, defeating Qyincy Symonds (Tweed Heads, NSW), Ocea Curtis (Lennox Head, NSW) and Jordy Halford (Currumbin, QLD) respectively in the final. Symonds was leading for the majority of the heat, but in the dying minutes Short managed to score a 5.60 to take the lead by only 0.27 of a point, and take out the final.
Hunter Andersson (Moffat Beach, QLD) has won the under 10 boys division, defeating Hayden Danswan (Peregian Springs, QLD), Lucas Deffenti (Miami, QLD) and Guy Henry (Fingal Head, NSW) respectively.
“I feel so happy,” said Andersson. “It was tough out there. It was good to get a couple of waves.”
In the under 10 girls division, Henley Smith (Suffolk Park, NSW) took first place with a total heat score of 15.34. Smith defeated Laney Stokes (Buddina, QLD), Leihani Kaloha Zoric (Byron Bay, NSW) and Kauri Heuson-Connor (Reedy Creek, QLD) respectively in the final heat. Smith was ecstatic about her win and was greeted by friends and family as she came in from the beach water.
Lucas Deffenti took first place in the under 8 mixed division, scoring a 9.5 combined with an 8.17 for a heat total of 17.67. Deffenti defeated Henley Smith (Suffolk Park, NSW), Leihana Kaloha Zoric (Byron Bay, NSW) and Angus Potts (Mermaid Waters, QLD) respectively. Deffenti was swarmed by friends and chaired up the beach after he paddled in from the heat, and was also awarded the Air Asia ‘Wave of the Day’ for his 9.5 scoring ride.
