Mitch Parkinson has taken out the 2017 Queensland Championship Circuit series

Mitch Parkinson (Coolangatta, QLD) has taken out Surfing Queensland’s blue ribbon Queensland Championship Circuit (QCC) series, taking home the prestigious Queensland Open Men’s trophy, a $1000 in prize money and the opportunity to compete against the world’s best surfers at the 2018 Quiksilver Pro trials at Snapper Rocks.

Today’s QCC Michael Peterson Classic (MP) at Palm Beach marked the final event in the 2017 QCC series and was taken out by Parkinson for the second time. A high scoring day of competition saw an absolutely nail biting finish to the series that came down to the final heat of the day between series leaders Parkinson and Thomas Woods (Elanora, QLD). With two podium finishes at the first two QCC events, Parkinson’s first placed finish today saw him claim precious ratings points to secure the series win.

In what was a high scoring day of competition, a stacked final saw four of Queensland’s best surfers light up in an aerial show for the crowded beach late in the day. Ricardo Christie (Tweed Heads, NSW), Nick Vasicek (Coolangatta, QLD), Thomas Woods and Mitch Parkinson all went blow for blow until the dying seconds, but in the end it was Parkinson who did everything in his power to hold off his fellow Gold Coasters. With a 9.23 and a 7.40 (out of a possible 10.00) up his sleeve, Parkinson was hard to beat despite a late surge from the New Zealand ex pat Ricardo Christie.

“I’d been thinking about it for a while and I really wanted to get it done this year. I’ve known Thomas since I was a kid and he’s a really good competitor and a great surfer, but you can’t think about that out there,” said Parkinson.

“I did the first event at the Alley Classic and really got the competition buzz back, I knew I wanted that Quiky trials spot and now I’m hoping to surf against my cousin next year.”

The Coolangatta local was on fire all day, dropping the only perfect 10.00 ride of the event. Parkinson will now get the chance to battle it out for the chance to compete against the world’s best surfers including cousin Joel Parkinson at the 2018 Quiksilver Pro trials at Snapper Rocks.
