Playful conditions for day one of the 2018 Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp presented by Wahu
Competitors were greeted with peaky 1-2ft (.5-1m) waves for day one of the 2018 Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp presented by Wahu at The Spit on the Gold Coast.
The opening day of competition saw each surfer given the opportunity to surf twice, courtesy of a unique contest format that aims to introduce many of the younger athletes to competitive surfing on a state level for the very first time. The results from the two opening non-elimination rounds were then collated and the quarter and semi finalists decided for day two of competition.
The youngest division of the event kicked things off for day one with the under 8’s mixed division providing some of the days top performances. Lucas Deffenti (Miami, QLD) and Beau Colless (Burleigh Heads, QLD) looked impressive in their debuts, showing both maturity and style to take out their opening heats. The second round of the under 8’s division will be the first in the water when competition resumes tomorrow at 7.30am for day two.
The Under 14 boy’s hit the water next and provided spectators with some impressive performances in the small playful conditions. With each surfer in this division having the opportunity to surf twice today, it was Touma Cameron (Suffolk Park, QLD) who emerged on top of the leader board with wins in both his round one and round two heats. Cameron managed to secure one of the highest heat totals of the event so far with a pair of 7.50 rides (out of a possible 10.00) and will go into tomorrow’s round of quarterfinals with confidence.
The Under 14 Girl’s continued to make light work of the small waves on offer later in the day, with 2016 event winner Lilliana Bowrey (Tewantin, QLD) impressing the judges with some powerful backside re entries on the prevailing right handers. The trend continued in the Under 12 Girl’s with Quincy Symonds (Tweed Heads, NSW) locking into some of the better waves on offer, demonstrating her textbook rail work and flow to take out both her heats and secure a place in the semi finals.
Day two of competition will get underway tomorrow morning at 7:30am with officials touting The Seaway Spit as the likely location to crown seven individual champions.
Regarded as one of the major stepping stones in the development of young Australian surfers, the 10-event Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps presented by Wahu caters for surfers from Under 8 to Under 14 and will be held in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia over summer. The prestigious event series will also return to Tasmania in 2017/18.
As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Woolworths Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC). For the South Australian, Victorian and Tasmanian events, the Woolworths Surf Camp prize will be awarded to the highest place Under-14 Boy and Girl who reside in that respective State.
Each entrant will also receive a Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps presented by Wahu t-shirt for entering, plus a Wahu beach product and there will be plenty of Wahu beach games and giveaways at each event.
