Queensland Grommet Champions crowned today at Woolworths State Grommet Surfing Titles

Four Queensland grommet champions have been crowned today at the final event of 2018 Woolworths State Grommet Surfing Titles series. Ty Richardson (Palm Beach, QLD) took out the under 14 boys division for the second year in a row, and Liliana Bowery (Tewantin, QLD) took out the under 14 girls division for the second year in a row as well. Rico Haybittle (Burleigh Heads, QLD) took out the under 12 boys series and Stella green (Buddina, QLD) took out the under 12 girls. Competition was held at The Spit, Main Beach and saw 1-2ft waves peeling toward the beach as the event got underway.

Ty Richardson was stoked to achieve back-to-back state title wins. “I’m so stoked to take it out two years in a row,” said Richardson. “I’ve been training really hard in the lead up to the event, I really wanted to win it back-to-back.” Richardson was closely followed by Ashton Pignat (Mount Coolum, QLD) Matt Boyle (Currumbin Waters, QLD) and Braxon Holmstrom (Buddina, QLD) respectively in the overall ratings. Richardson also won the event today, and after his win at event 1 on the sunshine coast his Queensland title was easily taken.

Liliana Bowery (Tewantin, QLD) has won the under 14 girls state title for the second year in a row, after her 1st place finish today (combined with a third at event 1). Bowery was closely followed by Grace Kama (Elanora, QLD) and Jahly Stokes (Buddina, QLD) in the overall series ratings. “It feels so good,” said Bowery. “I’m stoked to take it out 2 years in a row. The conditions were pretty tough today, but I’m always up for a challenge.”

Rico Haybittle (Burleigh Heads, QLD) has won the under 12 boys division in the overall series, defeating Scott Arderne (Tugun, QLD) and Landen Smales (Noosa Heads, QLD) respectively in the ratings. Arderne won the event today with Haybittle in second place, but Haybittle’s 1st place finish at event one was enough to secure him the title of Queensland state champion.

Stella Green (Buddina, QLD) has won the title of under 12 girls state grommet champion, after a first place finish at even tone combined with a second place finish today. Green was closely followed by Jordy Halford (Currumbin, QLD) and Oli Taylor (Peregian Beach, QLD) respectively in the overall series.

Matt Boyle was awarded the Airasia “Air of the Day” for his air-reverse he performed in his semifinal heat.

The series is a key stepping stone in Surfing Queensland's development pathway, with the likes of Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson and Bede Durbidge just a few of the high profile athletes who have previously competed in the series.
