The 2017 Australian Skin Cancer Clinics Immerse SUP & Paddle Festival kicks off this weekend
Stand up paddle boarders from right across Queensland will converge on the Gold Coast this weekend for the annual Australian Skin Cancer Clinics (ASCC) Immerse SUP & Paddle Festival that kicks off on Saturday the 22nd of July and will run over two days.
A prevailing southerly breeze on Saturday afternoon will provide ideal down wind conditions for the marathon leg of the event, which will see competitors paddle up to 20km in open ocean to finish at Currumbin Creek. The technical racing discipline will wrap up the event for 2017 on Sunday afternoon in Currumbin, with state champions and team allocations being decided across both disciplines this weekend.
The event that has now been running for over a decade is the essential pathway for those vying for a spot in the Queensland team set to compete at the 2017 Australian Stand Up Paddle (SUP) Titles on the Gold Coast in November. With the ASCC Immerse SUP & Paddle Festival being the pathway to a national title, event organisers are expecting to see the state’s best ocean ski, prone paddle and stand up paddle boarders line up this weekend.
“Both the marathon and technical race are a true test of stamina. We have a big SUP contingent in Queensland so we’re looking forward to putting together a strong team to represent the state at nationals in November,” said Surfing Queensland CEO Adam Yates.
On top of the state qualification divisions, this year’s event will see competitors in community divisions in both marathon and technical racing take to the water over the two days. The community divisions will see competitors of all skill levels don a competition rash shirt for what will be a huge weekend of stand up paddle boarding on the Gold Coast.
Competitors and spectators can call the Surfing Queensland Event Hotline after 6:30am each morning of competition for a confirmed start time and location Ph# (07) 3030 6388
The 2017 ASCC Immerse SUP & Paddle Festival is proudly supported by Australian Skin Cancer Clinics, Connecting Southern Gold Coast, HIF, Coastalwatch Plus, Surfing World, SurfAid, Pages, The Queensland Government and Surfing Queensland.
