Woods and Brooks take out the 2018 Sunshine Coast Pro
Thomas Woods (Burleigh Waters, QLD) and Ellie Brooks (Elanora, QLD) have taken out the QCC Sunshine Coast Pro in glassy 3-4ft (1.5-2m) waves at Coolum Beach.
In an exciting back-and-forth final in the Open Men’s division, reigning Sunshine Coast Pro champion Woods took first place with a two-wave heat score of 11.57 to defeat 2017 Junior Australian Champ Noah Stocca (Peregian Beach, QLD), Lincoln Taylor (North Stradbroke, QLD) and Tim Macdonald (Tugun, QLD). Stocca and Taylor were tied for the second half of the heat, which was exciting for spectators. However Woods waited patiently until late in the heat for the right waves to come – which paid off and put him in the lead for the rest of the heat. “The waves were pumping all day, and it was really good to have priority in a contest - everyone was ripping as well” said Woods. “I’m stoked to win two in a row – it’s really good to get nice waves too”.
In the Open Women’s division, Ellie Brooks showed her experience and persistence to defeat Sasha Baker (Mudjimba, QLD), Amber Dods (Sunrise Beach, QLD) and Tarnea O’Meara (Mooloolaba, QLD) in an exciting final. A slow-moving ocean didn’t stop Brooks from utilising her backhand skills on the peeling right-hand waves to score a heat total of 9.06. “I got pretty lucky with the wind”, said Brooks, “All the girls these days are very competitive so it’s good experience. I go to Mexico next week for a 6-star WQS event, I’m trying to qualify for the world tour”.
Woods also took out the Air Asia ‘Air Of The Day’ with a huge air-reverse in his round one heat, stunning spectators on the beach.
Each of today’s finalists will take home their share of the $3000 prize purse as well as precious series ratings points towards an overall QCC Title and a wild card position at the 2019 Quiksilver and Roxy Pro trials.
