SURF / SUP / BODYBOARDING Coaching Accreditations   

Surfing Australia's courses are the only accreditations recognised by the National Sporting Organisation for coaching and judging in Australia.  They are also the only courses recognised under the Australian Government's - National Coaching Accreditation Scheme, and Surfing Australia ensures all courses are run to the highest standards in terms of safety and coaching principles. (Please note that for all courses participants must be over 16 years of age to be eligible for accreditation.)

Surfing Australia and its' associated State Branches are recognised by the International Surfing Association as the world leader in the development of Coaching and Judging programs.


LEVEL ONE - SURF INSTRUCTOR

The Surfing Australia Level 1 Surf Instructors course is the minimum qualification required to be a surf instructor in Australia.

This course covers the necessary theory components and sports specific practical requirements to operate as a surf coach / instructor in surf school and club programs on Australian beaches.  Participants are invited to attend the 2 day theory course after which they will be required to complete all the necessary practical elements before becoming accredited. NCAS approved courses are recognised nationally and by some international affiliates of Surfing Australia's Licensed Surf school Network.

To obtain this accreditation candidates must adhere to the following requirements:

  1. Full attendance at the two day course
  2. 20 hours practical surf coaching experience (after completing the course)
  3. Pass a basic surf skills assessment
  4. A current ‘Working With Children' check for the relevant state (ie Blue Card)
  5. A Provide First Aid Certificate (HLTAID003)
  6. A current Ocean Rescue Award (one of the below):-
  • Bronze proficiency: Surf Life Saving Association
  • Surf Rescue Certificate: SLSA Community Award
  • Ocean Rescue Award: Royal Lifesaving Society
  • OSSCA - Australian Professional Ocean Lifeguard Association

Pre-Requisites Required to Sit the Course

  • Competence in Surfing Skills and Surf Zone Survival Skills (NB: beginner surfers cannot be accredited).
  • Good English language comprehension, reading and writing skills.
  • A current Surfing Queensland Membership.
  • Must be aged 16 years or older.
  • Course participants MUST have their Queensland Blue Card or alternatively their Blue Card Application ‘Notice of Confirmation’ Either of these items MUST be presented to the Coaching Course Presenter upon arrival at the Course. Failure to do so will mean automatic refusal of entry to the Course, until such time as this document is obtained.

Applicants can apply for their Blue Card ticking the ‘paid employee’ option (not the ‘volunteer’ option), if seeking future ‘paid’ employment as a Coach.  If ticking the ‘paid employee’ option, applicants have the choice of noting down their State Branch (Surfing Queensland), as the ‘employer’, if they are yet to secure employment with an affiliated Surfing Australia Surf School and until such time as they obtain an alternate employer at a later date.

LEVEL TWO - SURF COACH

The Surfing Australia Level 2 Coaching Course provides the theory and practical knowledge for a coach to deliver club level development programs for novice to advanced skill level surfers.

To obtain this accreditation candidates must have held a Level 1 Surf Coaching accreditation for a minimum of 2 years and must adhere to the following requirements:

  1. Full attendance at the 2 day course
  2. Successful completion of the Assessment Workbook
  3. Pass the Level 2 online exam
  4. Pass a basic surf skills test
  5. A current ‘Working With Children' check for the relevant state (ie Blue Card)
  6. A Provide First Aid Certificate (HLTAID003)
  7. A current Ocean Rescue Award (one the below):-
  • Bronze proficiency: Surf Life Saving Association
  • Surf Rescue Certificate: SLSA Community Award
  • Ocean Rescue Award: Royal Lifesaving Society
  • OSSCA - Australian Professional Ocean Lifeguard Association

STAND-UP PADDLEBOARDING (SUP) COACHING COURSE - FLAT WATER (Enclosed)

The Surfing Australia SUP Flat Water Coaching Course is the minimum qualification required to coach Stand-Up Paddleboarding in an enclosed flat water environment.

To obtain this accreditation candidates must adhere to the following requirements:

  1. Full attendance at the course
  2. 20 practical SUP flat water coaching experience (after completing the course)
  3. Pass a basic SUP skills assessment
  4. A current ‘Working With Children' check for the relevant state (ie Blue Card)
  5. A Provide First Aid Certificate (HLTAID003)
  6. A current Ocean Rescue Award (one of the below):-
  • Bronze proficiency: Surf Life Saving Association
  • Surf Rescue Certificate: SLSA Community Award
  • Ocean Rescue Award: Royal Lifesaving Society

SUP SURF and/or SUP OPEN WATER modules

The objectives of the SUP Open water and SUP Surf modules are to up-skill the accredited Flat Water SUP coach with the competencies required to deliver lessons and programs in an open water or surf related environment.  To obtain either of these certifications, candidates must:

  1. Hold a current flat water SUP accreditation
  2. Full attendance at the course
  3. 10 practical SUP flat water coaching experience (after completing the course)
  4. Pass a basic SUP skills assessment
  5. A current ‘Working With Children' check for the relevant state (ie Blue Card)
  6. A Provide First Aid certificate (HLTAID003)
  7. A current Ocean Rescue Award (one of the below):-
  • Bronze proficiency: Surf Life Saving Association
  • Surf Rescue Certificate: SLSA Community Award
  • Ocean Rescue Award: Royal Lifesaving Society

BODYBOARDING COACHING COURSE

The Surfing Australia Bodyboarding Coaching Course is the minimum qualification required to be a Bodyboarding coach in Australia.

To obtain this accreditation candidates must adhere to the following requirements:

  1. Full attendance at the course
  2. 20 hours practical surf coaching experience (after completing the course)
  3. Pass a basic bodyboarding skills assessment
  4. A current Surfing Queensland membership
  5. A current ‘Working With Children' check for the relevant state
  6. A Provide First Aid certificate (HLTAID003)
  7. A current Ocean Rescue Award (one the below):-
  • Bronze proficiency: Surf Life Saving Association
  • Surf Rescue Certificate: SLSA Community Award
  • Ocean Rescue Award: Royal Lifesaving Society
  • OSSCA - Australian Professional Ocean Lifeguard Association

PLEASE NOTE

  • An Individual must be 18 years of age or over before they can legally act as a ‘stand alone' Coach / Head Coach, in charge of their own group of Surf School participants and can be factored into the mandatory coach to student ratio requirement - 1:8 (in optimum conditions)
  • An individual must be 16 years of age to act as an ‘Assistant Coach' under the direct supervision of an experienced, qualified and current Surfing Australia Coach. The Assistant Coach can also be factored into the mandatory coach to student ratio requirement - 1:8 (in optimum conditions), as long as the Assistant Coach is within line of sight and direct communication with an experienced, qualified and current Surfing Australia Coach (who must be 18 years or over)
  • An individual under the age of 16 may act as a ‘Support Coach' under the direct supervision of an experienced, qualified and current Surfing Australia Coach (who must be 18 years or over). A ‘Support Coach cannot be factored into (have no bearing on) the mandatory coach to student ratio requirement - 1:8 (in optimum conditions).

NB:  Official Level 1 Surf Coaching Cards, signifying the satisfactory completion of all accreditation requirements, will only be released by Surfing Australia once the participant turns 16 years of age.


RECOGNISED PRIOR LEARNING - RPL/RCC

Candidates that feel they already have the required competencies in any of the above courses, can apply to have their skills recognised and acquire their coaching accreditation without the requirement of attending a course.
