In 2010 local surfers and parents came together to form the Yorkes Junior Surf Club. The clubs aim is to encourage and support young local kids and families discover the wonderful journey of surfing on the Yorke Peninsula. Qualified surf coaches and parents help juniors build surf safety and surf skills from beginner levels to more advanced levels.
The response has been fantastic with over 80 registered junior members each year since we started. We meet on the last Sunday of each month and choose safe surfing venues to promote having fun with the whole family at the beach. Local farmers, vets, doctors, police officers all attend to help out and build community spirit and adopt healthy lifestyle principles with the young surfers.
Five years ago we introduced the BERRY BAY SURF JAM, a state level junior surf contest that also included white water divisions for surfers having their first crack at competing. White water entries have proved very popular with around 50 competitors in the under 10 to under 14 years divisions. We also ran under 14, under 16 and under 18 boys and girls divisions in the surf event attracting around 45 competitors
On the 17th and 18th of February we will present the sixth BERRY BAY SURF JAM and aim to continue the success. With a little help from our local council and great support from the surf industry and local business we will reward all junior surfers for their surfing efforts. Last year there was great support from parents and young surfers of the mid coast, south coast, KI and Adelaide who travelled over and took home the beautiful glass wave trophies and the two large perpetual surfboard trophies. This year we will have two more brand new surfboards to present to some lucky surfers and one more for the raffle. We also have a sponsors tent at the contest site with lunch and drinks provided and invite all sponsors to attend.
The Berry Bay Surf Jam is a family friendly event and we invite all competitors, family and friends to join us on Saturday night in Corny Point for dinner and a chat. This helps local crew build friendships with surfers from all over the state and for all to get together for the development of junior surfing in South Australia in a safe and fun environment.
We love to be part of surfing development in Australia and hope to introduce more children to a life long commitment with the ocean through the 2018 BERRY BAY SURF JAM
