First Elimination Rounds Hit The Water On Day Two Of The 2018 Surf Dive ‘n Ski Australian Junior Surfing Titles

MIDDLETON BAY/SOUTH AUSTRALIA(December 3rd/2018): The first elimination rounds headlined day two at the Surf Dive ‘n Ski Australian Junior Surfing Titles in 3-4ft surf at Middleton Bay today.

In the Under 18 Boys knock out round, Victorians Xavier Huxtable and Chad Garrett stood out in the solid conditions. Huxtable used superior wave selection to post the highest heat total of the round with 14.85 points (out of a possible 20 points), racking up an 8.5 point single wave score after linking up the outside bank all the way through to the sand, delivering a handful of well-timed turns in the pocket.

Taj Simon was a standout in the Under 16 Boys requalification round, posting a 12.20 point heat total (out of a possible 20 points) whilst in the Under 18 Girls requalification round it was Queensland’s Piper Harrison and Western Australia’s April McPherson who impressed the judges with 11.25 and 10.80 point heat totals respectively.

Carly Shanahan well and truly put herself back in the minds of her fellow competitors after posting a round high heat total of 14.75 points (out of a possible 20 points) in the Under 16 Girls requalification round.

School Sports Australia Allstars and MR Shield divisions also hit the water on day two with Under 16 Girls Allstars, Under 19 MR Shield and Under 16 MR Shield boys and girls round one completed.  Victoria top scored in round one of the Under 19 Allstars boys division while Queensland took top honours in the girls Under 19 Allstars.

With a joint National Titles encompassing Individual (Under 14, 16 and 18 age groups) and Australian School Surfing Association (Allstars and MR Shield) disciplines in both boys and girl’s divisions, the event is considered the benchmark of junior surfing in the country. 

With past winners including World Champions Steph Gilmore, Chelsea Hedges, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Mark Richards, Tom Carroll and Damian Hardman, a win in this year’s event is a legitimate stepping stone to world stage glory.

The Surf Dive n Ski Australian Junior Surfing Titles features the Australian Junior Titles and the Australian School Surfing Titles. The key dates for the event are:

Sunday 2nd – Saturday 8th December, 2018:

Contest period for both the Australian Junior Titles and Australian School Surfing Titles (Competitors in all divisions are required to be in the Fleurieu Peninsula region for the duration of the contest period)

Tuesday 4th December – Saturday 8th December, 2018: Contest period for the Under 14’s Boys and Girls Australian Junior Titles divisions.

Venue(s): Competition is fully mobile in the Fleurieu Peninsula (See contest venues below)

Times: Competition is expected to commence each day at 7:30am and run through to approximately 4:00pm each day
