Yorkes Grom’s dominate at round 1 of the Woolworths Junior Surfing State Titles

South Australia’s top junior surfers were challenged with large but perfect surf at West Cape, Yorke Peninsula. One of the heaviest waves in South Aus turned on for the comp seeing plenty of perfect tubes and broken boards during the warm up session.

In the blue ribbon U18 divisions local Yorke’s surfers Digby Tooze and Grace Knight stole the show. 14 year Digby also went on to win the 16 Boys with a display of powerful surfing way beyond his age. Imogen Elliot took the 16 girls. The Under 14 Girls went to Yorke’s local Meg Day and the Under 14 Boys was taken out by Seaford grom Tai Taite.

“The weekend provided our juniors with some seriously testing conditions but these heavy waves are exactly what aspiring young surfers need to prove themselves in”, said Mathew Anlezark contest director. “That was a great event, everyone had a fantastic time and we are really grateful to the Yorke’s locals for sharing their beautiful spots with us. We would also like to thank the Corny Point Caravan Park for their support and putting on the BBQ for everyone on Saturday evening. Thanks to the participants, parents and spectators for a great weekend”.

The 2018 Woolworths SA Junior Surfing Titles forms a key part of the Surfing SA development pathway and attracts the states best surfers who are all seeking qualification to the Australian Junior Surfing Titles, which will take place in South Australia later this year.

Future Australian surfing champions will receive further help to ride the wave to success, with Woolworths expanding its commitment to the sport to include Surfing Australia’s six affiliated State branches Woolworths State Junior Surfing Titles, with 18 events to be run nationally across 6 States in 2017/18.

At each event, Woolworths will connect its store teams with the sport and celebrate the next generation of champions in local communities in each state.
