BRUNY MAGIC PREVAILS
The second round of the 2018 Woolworths TAS State Junior Surfing Titles, Presented by HIF, went down over the weekend on Bruny Island. Middle Bay presented warm summer postcard perfect conditions on Saturday with 1 to 1.5 metre surf for the heats and U12, U14 Finals. The late frontal system blasted in from the south soon with 25 knot winds pushing a 2 to 3 metre surf for finals day on Sunday where judges witnessed some great power surfing from Liam Viney, Darcy Edwards, Bella Goward, Robbie Green,Rudy Davis, Tom Kelly, Keiren Thomas, Luca Brodribb etc in challenging conditions. Judges were forced under tarps to do their work while Head Judge Johnno Nordstrom used binoculars to keep check on competitors and volunteer Kim Gibson who rode shotgun out the back keeping a close eye on the younger divisions guiding them to the best take off spots.
The Bruny Junior Classic has firmly become such a great summer weekend each season thanks to the awesome work of SABR BRC, Event Director Ange Nordstrom, Head Judge Johnno Nordstrom and SABR President Eddie Lawrence over the past few years. They secured more than $5500 in prizes from supportive local, state and national sponsors, putting on such a great event and Presentation Function. Louise Gibson deserves special mention for taking on the social organising which resulted in 76 people heading for the Bruny Hotel for a ‘team counter meal’ on Saturday evening.
Surfing Tasmania would like to publically acknowledge their great work in hosting this round of the HIF State Championship Series; Rd. 2 of the Woolworths TAS State Junior Surfing Titles- The Bruny Junior Classic and Open Longboard Comp. Congratulations and thanks to the surfers, event organisers, sponsors, volunteer judges, water safety etc

I have been going to Bruny since 1970 surfing and camping and as usual on the ferry home I recalled so many wonderful trips with family and friends and the unique magic of Bruny and the ferry ride. For me not much has really changed in that time and it is reassuring to see car loads of families, friends and young surfers camping in the Middle Bay camp ground, still being able to experience the same magic against such a spectacular backdrop as Cloudy Bay. The RVs and peak tourist season traffic come and go but Bruny still delivers the magic !
