RENWICK AND DAVIS MASTER CLASS IN SPEED POWER FLOW AT BRUNY OPEN FINAL.
The Bruny Open Classic went down yesterday in idea Autumn conditions at warm and sunny Middle Bay on Bruny Island and 1 to 1.5 metre consistent surf with left and right banks. The small but very competitive fields in the Open Mens, U21s, Longboard O/35s and 045/50 and B Division provided exciting surfing for spectators, Head Judge Karl Gol and judging panel volunteers.
Current Ope...n State Champion Hamish Renwick and rising star and U21 State Champion Rudy Davis took full advantage of the consistent right handers peeling across the bay to demonstrate their full repertoire of national standard competition surfing. Both won ever heat as they surfed towards a classic final showdown where judges had to countback to their fourth highest waves to find a winner by the proverbial whisker, .5 of one point in Renwick’s favour!
The Open Longboard Final was also a very exciting clash that featured former National U18 Longboard Champ Hamish Renwick up against 2016 national finalists, Keiren Thomas and Micheal Paxton. These three went wave for wave with Kiz Thomas showing his class coming out on top from Renwick with Paxton in third.
Zeb Critchlow enjoyed the long peelers on his forehand to take out the very competitive 0/35s from Luke Johannesen and Mark Wilson. In winning, Zeb received the Jimmy Hargreaves Memorial Trophy.
The combined 0/45/50 and B Div final was equally competitive with Chris Potter surviving the challenges to come out on top from Cam Lynch and Al Thomas.
The Open Womens final was a north verses south class between the two juniors; Sophie Adams from the nw coast and Sophie Bowden from Hobart. Both girls enjoyed their 30 minutes in the lineup being selective with finding waves that suited their ability.
